Number plates and Ringers Question ??
Guy where i work has bought a Landrover Discovery some 8 months ago. Its a TD4, 1998 Model. Its was first registered he said in the Isle of man . Only trouble is its on a X plate, which would make it 2000 model, which should make it a TD5. Surely if it had been registed in the Isle of man it would be on a Q plate ??. Hes paid 12 k for this apparently so he said. Like a fool he didn,t HPI it . It looks the dogs dangly bits (too good to be precise). I said he,s bought a ringer . Opinions Please Scoobynetters ??

Like any import i'd assume you can get a year related plate issued with the right documentation showing when/where it was first registered.
Regarding what it should be, if he gets the chassis number and engine number a Land Rover dealer should be able to check it and see when it was built, and what engine it had when it was built etc. My local specialist checked out my ex-Army Defender to make sure it had the right chassis/engine/axles/suspension.
I'm pretty sure the different parts of the chassis number mean different things, same as they do with Scoobys.

Don,t know about V5 Ollyk.
Hes had a problem with Main Dealer has they won,t sell him parts as Chassis number doesn,t match somewhere. He was trying to buy a remote for central locking and dealer needed chassis number. When he gave it them they declined.
Strange or what??

if a car made 10 years ago has been sat in the dealers unregistered and some1 buys it it could go on a 04 plate atm (presuming off course it passes all regulations) the plate only indicates when it was registered

Is it still on a Manx plate? X###*MN is the most usual format. They seem to just randomly issue the prefixes, I'm pretty sure the prefix doesn't relate to any year. You're meant to register it in the UK after 6 months or so of being on the mainland. If it looks enough like a normal UK plate the previous owner has probably never had to bother.
For example, my cousin had a Vauxhall Chevette with the manx plate X66MAN (which is why he bought the car ), but when he came over to live on the mainland, he had to have it changed to a uk plate with a Y suffix (i.e. they worked out how old it was and issued a suitable plate, not a Q) as he kept getting stopped for having an X plate Chevette!
Hopefully it's not as dodgy as it first seems.

Most of them finish in MN; CMN, DMN, LMN are amongst the most common IIRC, it's a while since I've been there. A few do finish in MAN, but they're mostly kept as personal plates - 555MAN would be a goodun .
