Richard Burns
Hello all,
Does anyone have an update on how Richard Burns is doing these days.
I am sure many on Scoobynet would like to pass on our best regards and wishes to Richard and his family?

If you take a look at Robert Rieds column in this months Rally XS he hints at Burnsie's condition. If I remember correctly, he's through a lot of the treatment and is responding well. He's out of hospital and is recouporating (sp) at home.

My aunite recently died from a brain tumor. I don't know what the Burns case is but with my Auntie it effected her muscle control etc.

She has done a lot more than cycle round the UK Olly, she does marathons and Iron Man type races. Jane Tomlinson is her name I think. She has raised nearly a million for a cancer charity.
Fantastic woman and I keep hoping she gets a miracle cure.

From RichardBurns.com
Robert Reid has been spending time with Richard and comments: "I know Richard wants to thank his friends and fans for their continued support; he has received so many good wishes - it's really been amazing. At the moment Richard's channelling all his efforts into getting through the treatment which is obviously proving both physically and mentally challenging. However he remains positive and is in a really good frame of mind."
Richard would like to thank everyone for their ongoing respect for his and his family's privacy.
I have also read that Burnsie has lost an awful lot of weight because of the treatment he has undergone. This worried me when I first read it as when Burnsie was last seen in the media he was pretty thin then due to his fitness regime and striving to be as fit as possible. So god knows how he's looking now.
Anyway, full respect to Richard and I hope we hear/see him soon.

I woudl say there's no doubt that Richard will want to drive again - but will the FIA let him? Jamie Whitham beat Hogdkinson's Disease and rode WSB/WSS after his recovery so I hope that the same will apply to Burnsie.
Given his health it was remarkable what he achieved in his last season - one of the most talented drivers of recent times IMO, and a Brit!

As above, treatment appears to be on-going.
Looks like we will all have to wait and see if he returns or not.
best wishes to him anyway

If you HAD to choose a cancer you would choose Hodgkins. It has the highest survival rate of any cancer. 9 out of 10 survive with no side effects.
Why do I know this? Well, I am the one of the 9..........

I was commenting on whether the FIA would allow Burns to race again once his recovery is complete and using JW's case as an example where someone has defeated cancer and returned to action.
Must say I'm not an expert on cancer so apologies for my lack of knowledge.

I wasn't having a dig at you.
I don't know enough about a brain tumour, but I would have to thinks it's more serious than Hodgkins.
BUT, if it has no impact on him driving (Like JW) then I can't see it being a problem.

I suspect it will all depend on where abouts on the brain it is and how big it is. Know a person that had a tumor and was fine afterwards (bar being deaf in 1 ear), certainly no motor issues. We'll just have to wait and hope I guess...

For the people who dont know whats happened here is the statement from RichardBurns.com. It was dated 17th November 2003 and reads:
Richard Burns has been undergoing tests in hospital to determine the cause of the health problem he suffered before Rally of Wales. These tests have been concluded and the doctors have now confirmed that he has a Astrocytoma. Richard will undergo a course of radiotherapy treatment which the doctors are confident will prove successful. However, they have confirmed that he will be unable to compete in the 2004 FIA World Rally Championship.
Richard says " I would really like to thank everyone for their continued support - it means a lot to me. My fans, the Peugeot WRC team and also everyone at Prodrive and Subaru have all been tremendous. The doctors have advised that I am unable to get back in a rally car for the 2004 FIA WRC Championship and I have to accept that. I'm obviously extremely disappointed but I am feeling very positive and I am determined to focus all of my efforts on getting back to full fitness as soon as I can.”
Richard has asked that people respect his and his family’s privacy in what has been, and will continue to be, a difficult period. Additional information will be given once Richard has completed the course of treatment referred to above.
