Making A Complaint to the NHS...
Hi
Never written a letter of complaint before and just wondered who to address it to at the hospital to make sure it doesn't end up in the bin and ignored Someone mentioned the Administrator to me??
Thanks

Go to the NHS website and look for the hospital you are complaining about.
They have a specific section IIRC for complaints/grievances - I had a go at one of their people-carrier things which nearly ran me off the road.

click on grievances

hope this helps

Don't know what trust you are in, but for example, here's how you would do it if you lived in Edinburgh....

I'm sure your trust will have a similar webpage....

Remember when complaining that the majority in the NHS are doing the best they can with the limited resources they have.....
That's not to say there are often genuine causes of complaint.....

Imlach believe me this is a very genuine reason for a complaint. Negligence and total lack of knowledge with medical procedure is foremost in this instance, messing with a 6 month pregnant lady with a trainee dr/nurse who hasn't got a clue is risking two peoples lives, not just one! I was horrified although not surprised when I found out what happened. I have a very nasty history with this hospital and to be honest the place needs bulldozing with the staff in it!

I think I recall your history with this hospital, and what you have experienced. Not good.
However, I really can't believe the place is teeming with negligent medical and nursing staff. Someone would have noticed by now.
Sometimes negligence can be misconstrued as 'probability of diagnosis'. That's how medicine seems to work sometimes. No-one ever gets the care they think they deserve.

1 example thats not particulalrly personal that im sure W69 wont mind me saying is them getting a vein in the wrist instead of the artery and then realising that blood is pouring out under the skin as they had inserted the needle incorrectly as they didn't know what they were doing so that her wrist was black and they had to get the anaethetist to come and stop the bleeding ffs and get the artery to get the right blood for the test. Thats just part of the issue. I would have gone nutts if i'd been there

Not trying to excuse their behaviour......just trying to show the other side of the argument. 3 attempts may not be negligence, just a patient with a difficult vein...

Yes Imlach but causing rapid bleeding under the skin due to total lack of knowledge of what they are doing and having to call for the anaethetist immediately is hardly excusable. They couldn't even work an ecg machine ffs and had to call up another hospital to ask for help with certain procedures as they had not done them before
If they haven't got any clue whatso ever about the procedure then they should not be attempting it on their own for the first time. If there is no one to supervise them then they shouldn't be doing it full stop and someone who knows what they are doing should be seeing the patient.

...and at the end of the day, you're still here safe & well.......the way doctors are trained means responsibility from Day1. They quite often do a lot of things "for the first time". They're shown how to do something once, and then they are expected to do it themselves on their own. That's how the NHS works. Not ideal, but that's how doctors are brought up to learn.
ie, have you come out of hospital in a worse physical condition than you went in? If not, where is the negligence?

Yes she has! Still has the same condition which they didn't have a clue about and is now covered on both arms in bruises and needle holes and some on her legs as well so yes W69 is in a worse condition than when she went in
The negligence is where the idiot who caused the bleeding under the skin didn't have a clue what they were doing and basicaly caused internal bleeding. Had to get an anaethetist pronto before it got dangerous ffs and stop the bleeding and drain off what was under the skin

OK....well, let us know what they say. Everyone, quite rightly of course, has the right of complaint. Be interested in the outcome.
Hope you are happier with future care as the pregnancy goes on....
Good luck.

Well having had no outcome whatso ever from them on my previous history, just a reluctant apology for something far more serious I doubt they will do anything about how they treated W69, but if you don't lodge a complaint then its never recorded.
I have suggested to W69 that as we are moving in 2 weeks we move hospital as well as the new local hospital is a modern one with far better facilities and I am asking them for a tour of the maternity ward to see what its like. It can't be any worse than Pembury thats for sure. I know new hospitals don't generally mean better staff, but I believe staff would want to work in a modern hospital rather than an old dump and the better qualified staff would get the jobs at the more desirable hospital and the lesser qualified staff would end up at the places where no one wants to work.

I also think a copy should be sent to the local health authority. Both hospitals in Tunbridge Wells have been lined up to be replaced for a very long time now yet the Government wont give the funding for a new hospital. They are both a disgrace, they both have very severe hygiene problems with Kent and Sussex coming last in recent polls on the cleanliness of the hospitals in the south east, with it having the highest number of mrsa cases and other bugs.

Must be all part of the so called postal code lottery with the NHS. I had my quad bypass done at Derriford in Plymouth and the treatment I received was almost as good as being in a private clinic. As you say, a lot of it is down to the quality of the staff and almost certainly also how they are treated by their own Trust.
Hope W69 finds the new hospital is a great deal better.
