My sky+ box failed to record the other month and it was replaced with a refurbished box. Now I've got a wierd problem. When I hit record while watching, upon playback it's recorded several minutes before the point at which I started recording. Is this some kind of funky feature that I need to disable?

That's a recent(ish) upgrade to the functionality. Now, when you record something that youve been watching, it also records the buffer.
