Having had SKY+ at home and it being a cherished member of the family already I decided we need it at the office. This is a perfect solution to store programmes that we produce content for but that are finalised and broadcasted abroad. SKY+ would seem IDEAL to let us review the prog the next morning and avoids any VHS timer setting mistakes or time zone issues. Anyway...

They just wont do it! SKY+ is not allowed in commercial premises. I can understand a concern about creating a mini cinema in a backroom in a pub, but this is an office, and we pay £110 a month for an office licence.

I’m thinking of wonderful solutions like having it installed in a staff members home and then carting it over whilst paying both subscriptions, but does anyone have any idea of any other, simpler solution?

err, yes it will, just the Tivo listings, not the Sky listings.

I want Sky+ at home, but until they drop the price of the box, or stop the monthly subs fee they can **** off. I already pay em almost £50 a month plus the phone bill which now goes through them.

They need to loosen up a bit on the + pricing before everyone gets it. All the Kelly Brook advertising in the world won't change that.

Sky+ doesn't have a monthly subscription anymore if you subscribe to the movie channels.

They were doing an offer of £99 + £1 installation fee. I was tempted but was too late. If anyone has a link to an offer like that, please let me know...

And yep they force me to take SKY Movies 2 & Sky Sports 2 at home as the cheapest package deal without me 'wasting' a £10 on letting me use the hard drive on the equipment I just bought! I have yet to view a movie or watch Sky sports 2 in 3 months!!!

There is something of the big brother about them indeed!!!!

I went to Dixons, and after drawing a diagram of what a SCART lead was, they admitted they didnt have one that was 5.9 miles long LOL

Will 'standard' SKY switch channels to the one you have set a reminder for, when it's time?

I looked into buying Sky+ last weekend and the deal was £199 + £5 install.

First month £40 standard channels + sky sports and movies
After first month could change to a lower priced tariff but if you do not include either sky sports or movies they do still charge an additional £10 a month for .......? well the ability to record I guess!

Surely they will drop this £10 a month charge soon, wont they?

You may as well go the whole hog and pay £50 per month. For this you'll get SKY+ and another digibox for another room (both with all movies and sports channels etc). This means you can watch/record 3 different Sky channels at once! Essential in my house...

I was offered the additional box etc total £50 per month but a second box is not required in my house.

Ideally I want Sky+ (dont mind paying £199 + instal £5) but I only want the standard channels, I think £19.50 per month. Wouldnt watch that much sport or the movies so I will not pay £30 - £35 a month+ and the cost of a TV license just to watch the few channels I like.

Erm, say you want another sky+ install at home (or a relatives), including another dish, get them to install it, rip it down and pay a local installer to put it in at the office

I thought of that Jules - the installer wasnt keen at all to say the least & also said they can do random phone line checks...

As for the second Skybox thing I got one of those in my SKY+ deal (it's only composite out mind) and was shocked to find I was being charged £10 a month for it. I challenged them and said I already have a coax & magic eye affair if I want to watch SKY in bed - why on earth should I pay an extra tenner?

They were good enough to drop the cost & I can now view only the free to air channels in bed, but with SKY+ full package coming up the stairs on 'channel 0'

Ohh and TIVO can switch SKY box channels??? WOW!

Don't know if it would do the same on Sky+, but my sky box switched on (was on standby at the time) to Eurosport for the Rally coverage the other week even though the coverage was delayed 15 minutes or so due to boxing. Sky then switched off (back to standby) again at the schedule time rather than the actual program end! Could cause problems using Tivo if there are program delays!

Seeing that sky can't sell outside the UK the above allows you to purchase a card and equipment that can be used where you like. I suppose the same could be used for sky+ for a business in the UK.

I can't vouch for them, as I've never tried it.

As for Sky's irritating brainwashing attempts (with the token scottish accent -as for some reason they think people percieve scotsmen as trusting people!! ) move your old box to another room for "ONLY" £10 a month. Yeah right! £120 a year....you know what they can do with that "amazing offer"

Hi people a really simple question... Do you have to have a telephone line for sky to work... Already asked about sky plus but it's a shared dish and sky won't touch it to upgrade it...??

My standard sky works fine without a telephone line and I see no reason why sky+ wouldn't also function without the phone line. You only need the phone for the interactive services, so if you don't use the interactive side of sky/sky+ then there's no need for a phone connection.

Generally, the sky deals come with the proviso you have to have it connected to a phone line for the first year. If you don't want it connected you will have to pay full wack!

Don't see how having a shared dish would stop sky from letting you have sky+. The satellite position, signal and dish should all be the same, its just the box thats different. If you get sky+ they let you move the old box to another room and continue to use the normal service fed from the same dish (shared dish!). Whats the difference if you share the dish with other appartments?

I want sky + but it seems sly that I have to pay 50 quid intsall when a new user gets it for a quid I dont mind paying for the box but £250 seems steep

They already get 40 quid a month off me plus my premierplus ticket (£40 a year).

I was told they have to change the eye on the dish and also add the second cable... When you call sky they won't touch it... Have to get another company to do it... It's on a new housing development and its all done as part of the multiroom install stuff... I need it as a tuner to my plasma as my freeview digibox isn't working too well... So can you get sky if you don't have a phone line..?? or does it cost extra..?

Yes you can get sky without a phone line, the monthly subscription will be the same but you will have to pay the full price for the box and installation.

Although you don't need installation as the dish is already set up for you. Your best bet is to either buy a second hand box from ebay or to find a specialist TV place that stocks sky boxes and you can avoid the installation fee!

Apparently the phone connection required for SKY is only used for the downloading of software updates at night time, but they insist you have a phone line before they will install it...

As for shared dish polarisation, they use a quattro LNB wich separates the High/Low V/H polarisations onto separate cables. These are then connected to an I.F. Distribution Unit which in-turn connects a single cable to each appartment and switches the correct polarised signal as requested from the tuner.

Sky+ needs two cables as requires one cable for each polarisation (h/v) - ie, can record one (actually two) channels as you watch another, so requires access to both polarisations at the same time.

Given your shared tuner only feeds one cable, and hence one polarisation to your digibox, you have a problem. You need two feeds from your shared tuner, which requires an upgrade of your shared tuner

All data transmitted YOU->SKY is via the telephone.

If they ask for your phone number give them a mobile number. If they say you need a phone line tell them you only have a mobile and you don't need a landline aswell.

Without a telephone connection you will not be able to use interactive services, such as ordering box-office films, TV banking, TV Shopping etc. It does not restrict the operation of the SKY box for viewing normal TV in any way.

Sky insist on a telephone connection as part of their free digibox or free installation deals, but you can pay full price for the box and installation and not connect to the telephone line.
