2 Stroke Outboard Oil - does it age?
Hiya
Off to do some inshore fishing tomorrow and all of next week - I have a 2 stroke Mercury Outboard bought last year
Now, while sorting out the garage I have come across some 2 stroke outboard oil from way back in 1982 when we used to go water ski-ing (about 3 litres of the stuff - thats a seasons worth!!)
Its a bit lumpy - but I have shaken it up to mix it again with itself - should I use it? or will I have Air/Sea rescue out in mid channel??????
Pete

LOL!
Theoretically oil should not go off (given that it has taken thousands of years to become oil in the first place ) however there are additives which could have taken a turn for the worst over the last 22 years in your damp old garage, particularly if its "lumpy". I have never known or heard of outboard oil turning lumpy before!
Technology has moved on and fuel : oil mix ratios are pretty lean (probably 100:1 in your 2hp) so what little goes in has to make it count. Personally I would bite the bullet and purchase some fresh!

Thanks all - although men in uniform do rock my boat and I quite fancy a winch and ride in a helicopter I think I'll buy some fresh!
Save the lumpy stuff for the river I reckon (its easier to get out on the bank there!)
2hp!! Cheeky Git!!

I can't really see someone as thrifty as your good self spending that much, but if you have really bought one of those then:-
a) fair play to you
b) do NOT put the lumpy outboard oil in it!!!
