Default Accident - Cash deal

Wife had an accident this morning. Reversing out of a parking space, some doddery old fool swiped the rear end.

Damage to wife's scenic, new bumper and paint £200 max.

Old guy's car is a K reg maestro and requires new front wing. Reality is it's a write off as there is more rust on it than metal.

Anyway pursuaded the guy that he knock the wing out and I'll give him £200 as a sweetener.

Planning on going round later with something for him to sign, what do you reckon. Something like this:

In full and final settlement of any claims relating to a collision between my car a red Maestro reg no. bla bla and a Silver Scenic reg no. bla bla, I have acepted the sum of £200 in cash from Mr. MattW.

That should cover his car damage, but what about his whiplash?

Yeah, just hope that the 'doddery old fool' has more moral fibre than most people now-a-days. Minimum he could claim for whiplash would be £500 I'd say.

BTW how come he is the 'doddery old fool' but yet you are the one paying for damage?

Add date, time, and location. You could add "I will not make any claim in future in relation to this incident." Get an 'independent' person, i.e. not you or your wife, to witness the signing. Have 2 copies and leave one with him.

Make sure he is happy to sign or else it could be considered under duress and worthless.

PS Make sure you are sitting down when the garage 'confirms' your £200 estimate for your own damage Bent subframe anyone?

Old - over 70 - stands to reason

Doddery - not so quick on his feet

Fool - I did mention the maestro didn't I

Have to say I think you are being a bit optimistic thinking a new bumper will be £200.

Someone went into the back of my Renault Clio (only a 1.2) a few years ago and the bill for a new bumper was £470.

Oh yes, but she is female (obviously) so can be excused.

Edited to say - Car park scrape, would probably go knock for knock if the insurance coy got involved. His car would be a write off too.

Joey - New bumper is circa £50. A real Renault one is £150, Was yours an insurance job???

Yes that is for a proper Renault bumper sprayed and fitted at a Renault dealer. It would have been an insurance job but It was so much hassle (they wanted me to pay the massive XS (£300) on the free renault insurance and then claim it back) in the end I just forgot about it as the damage was tiny.

So tiny infact that the same dealer didn't even notice when I traded the car in with them.
