Default New York New York

My girlfriend's booked a long weekend to New York for my birthday - wahey!

I'm planning on buying a laptop and a new camera lens whilst I'm out there. Can anyone recommend any decent electronics shops?

Adorama are also held highly amongst photographers.

I'd use B and H if it were me though.

Why not buy it online and have it shipped to your hotel in NYC? No sales tax then...

BestBuy is like Dixons with less informed staff. Yes, that is possible.

You should visit B&H photo anyway, it's an experience in itself - from the excellent Orthodox Jew employees, to the overhead track moving your purchases from place to place and every bit of camera gear you can imagine, it's a one off

Be aware that alot of suppliers will no longer ship to hotels. I know B&H don't

Can you not claim your sales tax back anyway, at the airport? Think I'll pop into B&H though - sounds good.

Another vote for B&H although don't try to sell any second hand equipment to them. The bloke upstairs was most surprised when I just walked out after, frankly, an insulting offer for an SLR and some decent kit and seemed to think I was going to negotiate.

The prices are good on new kit but if you want first rate advice then this probably isn't the place to go.

Default Another vote for B&H

I was in New York last week (blimey, have been back a week already) and used B&H. I knew what I wanted so had a quick walk round and could have spent loads, but stuck to the plan.. grabbed a sales man ordered my lens etc then off to pay.. could have been in and out in 2 mins if I'd not looked round.. Most bizarre how they give you your stuff then take it back.. great service and good prices (especially at the moment)..

Can't bring me some Oakleys back can you?

Give J&R a try. They're pretty good and usually up for haggling too. http://www.jr.com/

Yup - B&H and J&R are the best two.

B&H are mainly cameras - J&R are more generalist.

Remeber that if you buy a laptop it will have a US keyboard - no £ symbol etc.

Flying out tonight! Going to a place called TriState for my lenses - found them using Froogle. Decided on a Sigma 12-24 zoom and a Sigma 105mm macro to fit my Canon 300d.

Anything else much cheaper in the States which I should pick up?

Flash cards. Get as many as you can afford and sell some of them when you get back - they're about half the price in the UK.

Hmm, looks like a 1GB Sandisk CF is $150 over there and they go for £90 or so on ebay. Perhaps the prices have come down over here?
