Vacuum cleaners
Our aging Dyson DC04 is finally on its last legs, so we need to replace it. We need something that works really well on hard floors (we have no carpets, other than a coulpe of rugs) - preferably bagless. So what's the one to go for?

Henry? No way
We used to use a Henry at the bike shop when I worked there, and TBH it was a complete and utter pile of sh*te. They sell 'em for about £60 at CostCo, IIRC, but I won't be buying one. Plus I really want bagless.

I got a 'Samantha', picked it up from the local pub, its been working well for the last 8 years.
I think its bag needs changing though, as it has swelled up at the front, and its performance is not as good as it used to be.
Its seems to have lost some of its sucking action.....
I may have to trade it in for another one, I saw a nice 'Chloe' the other day, it seemed a lot slimmer and more compact than the 'Samantha'.

DC07 Animal is what we have.Used to have a DC01 which had really crappy suction when using the wand. The 07 animal is brilliant and you can sometimes see the carpet trying to be lifted from the floor with the power....
I bought mine nearly 2 years ago from Coop Electrical on the web for £224 (They were £289 at the time from the usual high street retailers)
Customer service at Dyson is good too.I broke a couple of the hand tools and called them up and they sent replacements through the post foc
Good luck
Nick

"Last legs" in what respect?
Dysons, despite their claims about not losing suction, need regular filter washing/replacement to maintain this. I did my DC07 the other month after thinking it was game over, and it came back working like the day i bought it....

I wash the filters about every 3-4 weeks (sometimes more often). One of the joys of having a house heated by a backboiler on an open fire is that the whole place is constantly filled with ash, coaldust, and sawdust (from logs) all year round.
The Dyson's on its last legs because the hose has several splits in it, a couple of the other plastic parts are snapped/cracked, and the clutch on the brushwheel is on the way out (which is a part, so the Dyson engineer told us when he replaced our first clutch under warranty, that costs more to replace than the entire thing ).
Basically, it's shagged, and the missus wants it relagated to vacuuming the workshop and replaced by a new lighter, keener, more efficient model which is better suited to non-carpet flooring...

I've owned 2 Dysons and to be honest neither of them are a patch on the Henry we've got now. I was sucked in by the Dyson marketing schpiel but when you look at commercial premises most of them are cleaned by people using Henrys, and a couple of builders we've had in swear by them as well.
If a Henry can cope with that kind of treatment then I'm sure they'll do your floors no trouble.

I've used a Henry for the past few years and its really good IMHO. I used to repair them ages ago and when I left I pinched one.
Never used a bag and its on the original dust cover thingy and still sucks like a dutch ***** (thankyou SN )
Can't get them anymore but the fixed cable ones were the best as the windy cable ones can break the little contacts after a while.
Plus if the motor ever gos its really about £10 - £20 to replace and dead easy. Also contacts are easy replaced to if the break.

despite suggesting the Miele I do have the Dyson DC 08. Sucks like a $10 ***** but not that great on carpet areas (I just this min. ordered the "turbo brush" though) If you like Dyson and prefer bagless that might be the way to go.

'Which' recommended the Miele S571 IIRC. Couldn't get my hands on one of those at the time so ended up with a nice 'Ferrari Red' Bosch one ...
... right, must talk about beer & football for the next 10 minutes to restore my blokey-ness!
