Angry FRUSTRATION

I'm consulting for a crowd in London atm & they pay me a retainer for 10 days per 4 week period. They're not fully utilising me atm & as some of the work can take place evenings/week-ends I'm pretty free during the week.

My wife's firm needs some databases sorted out over a 6-8 week period & need 6 people to do so. I applied as well with the idea that we could go to work together etc etc.

I was told that I'd be paid what they gave the agency for the other people, went to an interview on Tuesday, which went well & should do seeing what I'm normally employed as (ie over-qualified) and with remote access & flexiblity for the other lot promised them 40 hrs per week.

So I get a phonecall today (from someone I don't know) & am offered a job in another office in Cambridge and at the same amount as what the other people will receive, not what they're paying the agency!

I have also heard, via my wife, that they were short one person in Cambridge and as I lived geographically closest (ie not in the same town as my wife's office) then it was suggested I go there.

So, not only am I being offered less than I was told, I now would have to travel in the opposite direction (therefore buggering up child-care arrangements and not using the same car) and need to pay parking charges in Cambridge - so at least £60 extra costs per week - solely on the basis I lived closer! Plus I don't know anyone there and won't be able to remote access the system if I needed to do some work out of hours.

Also told to me in a "take it or leave it" fashion

GAHHHHHHHHHH

Well if you wanna get away from it all, we have just brought a House!!!!! :-)

There is plenty of work that we will need doing, fancy doing some painting?

Still gutted that we had to sell the Scoob to get it but it all seems to be working out for us here in Sunny Reading!

Still got the Wagon?

B

Depends how much you need the money, tell them you want the work but it has to be at the office you first mentioned, maybe suggest you will do it at the "cheaper" rate.

If they don't go for that then they are probably not worth working for anyway IMO. If you take the offer it sounds more trouble than its worth - how do you stand to earn BTW?

Surely this is all part of the negotiation. Say that you'll do it for the "agency" rate at the office your wife works at. If they say no, either compromise or go find something else.

BTW, working at the same place as your wife is a very bad idea. Might be possible to do 6-8 weeks without divorce proceedings being initiated, though

It's only a data cleansing operation over about a 2 month period. The money is (of course) useful but a genuine offer of help to the company when they're up against a deadline and I can possibly bring additional parts to the role as well as being able to deal with partners on a level basis. They need personable people to do the job & tbh the rate is pretty minimal as befits the requirement, however, I was offered the agency rate previoiusly and no mention of working in another office was made at any time.

Therefore, something which I'd be prepared to put up with (F I sound sanctimonious ) has now somewhat soured due to them moving me and trying to nib 20% off what I get. If I turn them down, they'll have to pay agency rate anyway, so whats the point? Its not a great deal of money anyway but its more the principal of it.

I'm getting paid by the London people anyway, so I don't have to sell PTMW! so the temptation is to tell them to stick it (politely as my wife still works there).

My wife has passed my points/views onto the HR person, so we'll see what happens.

Carl

There was no neg as such (hence why p'd off) it was "this is what is on offer, take it or leave it".

Anyway, already got 2 jobs atm (in addition to moderating ) so maybe a 3rd would be too much!

Did I say "anyway" a lot of times?

Sorry.

Its late & although I never made the pub, I've been supping beer/wine, watching Have I Got News For You/Friends and dug 10m of footings today before it started raining.

I've recently had a "take it or leave it" offer. I left it.

They'll soon come crawling back if they really need you.
