......Frustrating or what............

Have a new digital camera ready to download onto a PC. PC has a USB port on it and running windows 95.

I've been told 95 doesn't support USB........is this right?

Are there any patches to fix it?

Cheers

I think that you maybe able to download some drivers from Microsoft to support USB in 95, but think about loading 98SE or ME. It would be so much easier.

I have a look and see if I can find the drivers though.

Win95 release B (Or OSR 2.0 as it's also known) SUPPOSEDLY supports USB.If you right click the My Computer icon on your desktop it should tell you what version of 95 you are running. If you are running release B you can download the USB supplement from Microsofts website (It's also available on the original Win95 CD if you have it!)

Hope this helps?

Nick..

Cheers Babber....

Hows the land of cable? Hope Christmas was a good rest for you.

The camera is a Fuji FinePix 2600, the PC a work one.. They won't upgrade me from Windows95 as its the standard unless you get Windows 2000. Thats needs a business case which I haven't really got.

When I plug the camera cable in and set the camera up, I get no pop up message saying new hardware found. So I assumed it was a lack of driver for the USB port...

Cheers

ScoobySnack,

Cable modem is just fine, xmas was tiring

You should be able to download the drivers from the link I posted, it looks like the correct patch!! Once installed the OS will detect the device and enable it. I had a USB camera (web cam) that I had running on 95, so it will work.

You should think about 98SE, it sooo much better.

Just a quickly...

There's a file called something like USBSUPP.exe on the Win 95 OSR 2.x CD that installs some stuff for USB support.

Have a look on your CD for it.

Chris.

IIRC, the setup forces you to run scandisk as well. If you cancel it, setup won't install the USB support.

USB support is available as said before, but isnt very good IIRC. Also worth checking that USB is enabled in the BIOS (whack del on startup and have a search through) as that can prevent many hours of frustration!!

Red face

I remember hours of BSOD's when installing the usbsupp patch. Win95 was not designed with usb in mind, its just one of those bolt-ons, IMO go with Win98 or above.

Agreed that's what I've said, upgrade to Win98SE it's much better, although the scandisk is crap!!!

So you've loaded the 95 USB drivers and enabled the port in the BIOS and still nothing ?

Did Windows find the camera ? Did you load software that came with the camera ?

I now may have the error..........

Camera was not recognised.

But the software for viewing had been loaded and actually works. However this software is for either Windows 98 / Windows 2000.

Perhaps the drivers on the CD cannot be used to make this work....

However I'm still stumped to why the camera cannot be detected as new hardware on the USB port. Surely it should now something is there.....

Hi J,

I've got a couple for you from when I saw Kim!!!!

A drinky sounds good - shall we integrate the next one in to the Bagshot meet - Jo was talking about making it in a couple of weeks........

That is very strange about your pc........
Are you plugging it in when the OS is up and running or plug in and then boot?

Just having a read of the Fuji manual for the 2600.

http://www.fujifilm.co.uk/fujidc/bro.../2600_soft.pdf

Manual doesn't even mention Win95, so my thought is that the drivers don't support Win95. AFAIK, there were some changes between Win95 and Win98 so end of the line perhaps?

My Canon Digital Ixus works a treat on my work and home PCs - both Win 2000 Pro. Worth trying to convince the bean counters to get you 2000.
