I did it!
Sexy (may I call you that?),
I moved to Canada, specifically Niagara Falls, about two months ago. I work in IT for a non-IT company, and I transferred within that company to the Canadian subsidiary, so I'm not in quite the same boat.
You'll have seen from the Canadian Commission website on immigration that they strongly recommend that you don't just turn up on spec; I had the strongest possible backing from my company, including personal letters from directors saying that I was essential in Canada, and still had to go through three rounds of documentation before I go the *essential* work permit. If you're serious about emigration, I'd recommend that you have a firm job offer and a work permit before selling up in the UK. Oh, and don't forget that both of you will need work permits; spouses can't do anything but voluntary work without a WP of their own. The sad fact is that it's up to you to prove that there's no way a Canadian could possibly do the job you're doing; if there is, they don't want you in.
However, please try. Canada is a *really* great place to live; I wouldn't have jumped through the hoops I did to get here if it wasn't.
Just a couple of reminders if you do manage to sort something out:
A) You'll lose all UK insurance history; it took me two months to find someone who'll even insure me at all. Ask about driver education courses.
B) You'll lose all credit history - try and buy a mobile over here without it!
C) You need medical cover; if you have a job lined up, triple check how long it is before their health insurance kicks in - I had to buy three month's worth of traveller's insurance to cover the gap, and it cost more than my tickets.
D) Get your UK tax affairs in order; you're in form-filling hell.
E) Don't assume it's easy to pull money across from the UK. You're effectively assumed to be a drug dealer or terrorist.
Like I say, I don't want to be negative, but considering these things will help.

I know a group of 4 people who left for canada about 3 years ago - packed in their jobs, sold their houses and used the cash to tide them along until they got jobs.. 3 years later only one got a job and all 4 have returned without a bean and with no jobs.. I suggest you check the job situation 'cos it is still tough out there...

definitely not intending on just dropping everything and going there.
im WAY too sensible for that malarky...hence looking into it all now....2 years ahead of actually wanting to go!
so weapon69...how long do you have to have worked there to get the years maternity leave???
and i wouldnt mind about the 2 weeks annual leave. not if we can go snowboarding at the weekends in Whistler!!!

I spent a year in Calgary back in 1975/76 and tried to get immigration status in 1977 .Had a young family , job in Vancouver , money etc , but was refused on the basis that I had to work back in Calgary. So it feel in a heap and I eventually emigrated to Perth Western Australia.
Definitely made the correct move , albeit forced on me.
The weather in Canada is horrendous-the winter just goes on and on and I've never seen so many fat people in my life -well until you visit the states.
Come to Oz - believe me the lifestyle is far better.

This is worrying - my husbands ex-wife moved back to Canada with her latest husband (she's Canadian, he's a Brit).
Now I'm scared they'll get sent back over here

Try emigrating you stand much more chance than immigrating
PS Will 2nd the horrendous Canadian winters.... my ex moved there (Toronto) and the novelty of snow for 6months of the year didn't take long to wear off
