Unemployment benefit
Although I dont exactly need to claim it I might as well seeing as I've been paying inconme tax since I started working in 1989.
Thing is how do I go about it, can I do it on the net, over the phone or in person ???

You will need to pay a visit to the Benefit/Job Centre in Tunbridge Wells mate. Phone them up first, make an appointment and ask them what documentation you need to bring with you to the appointment. Whether you get any benefit will depend on how you came to be out of employment etc.
You will also need to show evidence at a bi-weekly meeting of your attempts to find work. Its called Job Seekers allowance and if you dont find a job with in a set time your benefit ceases if you don't take one of their recomended vacancies (which are always sh!te)

Don't know for sure but if you are studying then I don't think you will be able to apply for job seekers allowance unless you are actively searching for work now. If you are not wanting to work then you will have to look at funding through other means.

Jye all I am saying is what I was told and had to do when I was made redundant. I was given a set date to get a job by by which time I would have a choice of looking at a different career through their contacts or cease to get job seekers allowance. I had to go to the job centre every two weeks with proof of all the job interviews I had been to before they signed off my next benefit payment.
Chris what do uni students do? They get grants mate and have to work part time in supermarkets etc. Your argument there wont hold any water with the job centre unfortunately.

Yeah I know Bob, thats the 'sounds good in theory' bit The thing is you were looking for work as you 'want' to works, most of the lazy gits I come across dont though
96, as Bravo said, you need to be actively seeking work to claim JSA. I doubt distance learning will affect your availability to take up employment if offered

If you have worked for long enough prior to becoming unemployed then you will get employment benefit for six months no matter what, after the six months you will then be assessed for JSA/income support. TBO 96 if your partner is working you might not be eligible for much benefit wise as you are recieving income as a couple, think you'd have to go down the family tax credit route etc.

don't want to p*ss on the fire, but don't you have to have been sacked or made redundant to qualify for benefits? i thought you had to wait for 6 months before you can claim if you have left work for other reasons, as S96 did, albeit under a certain amount of duress.

I'd sign on straight away anyway, even if you get nothing immediately, you'll be in the system, so to speak. If you 'made yourself unemployed' I think there's a 6 month wait before you get something.
When I did my HNC (decades ago...), I could attend courses up to 18 hours a week and still claim as it meant I was still employable.
Good luck

What happens when you add childcare costs to the equation? I.e it is £1000 a month to stick the nipper in a nursery, but the job pays less than the nursery costs... Can you get a 'nursery allowance'?
