To dial back to the UK from the states you need to drop the 0 from the UK number and add 01144 in front of it.
So a UK number of 0161 555 5555 would become 01144 161 555 5555
To dial a UK mobile from the UK is the same no matter whether the mobile is in the US or the UK (aside from the costs of course).
If you are on a US number then dialling from the UK you need to prefix it with 001 so a US number of 555 555 5555 becomes 001 555 555 5555.
Hope this helps,
tiggers.

If you use your mobile whilst in the US then so long as the numbers are saved in your phonebook with the prefix "+44" (i.e. "+447890123456") then you just need to hit dial as usual, the phone/network takes car of the rest.
If you want to dial a new number not in your phonebook, it's as per tiggers post above.
To contact you in the US they just have to dial your number as usual (same as if you were in the UK). They pay the UK part of the call, you pay the international charge
of course you mobile will only work if you have a multi-band phone

Yeah well that;s Vodafone for you - crap here, crap there - what else did you expect? Never had a problem using a cellphone (as we're talking the US now )from Las Vegas, San Francisco, Phoenix, LA or Chicago.

I went to New York a few weeks ago, and used my mobile over there. I'm on O2, but all you have to do is call the vodafone helpline and ask for international call barring to be taken off. They'll probably ask you where you're going and what type of phone you have.
They'll then be able to tell you then if your phone will work and if you can use it, if it's all ok, that's all you need to do (just dial as described above).
How long are you going to New York for? I loved it there. St Ptricks day there was awesome (from what I remember from it!)

Cool...suprisingly its not too warm here yet.
Hopefully you'll see an Impreza or two on the roads, they're relatively rare here, though there are quite a few in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, and Tampa.
Have a great trip.
