Default Raleigh Choppers

I have been looking at getting one as I want to get fit and cruise round town easily. Are they comfortable to ride over reasonably long distances (4/5 miles) or do they just look good.

I am guessing that £200 is the best price around for them.

Cheers

James

I certainly wouldn't buy one to get fit!!!

I'm guessing you're an adult, and IMHO, adults will look pretty stupid on them. They're kids bikes

Get a normal bike. It'll go faster, be lighter, and no-one will look at you like some retro-chasing wierdo

Good honest opinion though

Fair enough. The answer is 'no' then. They are a piece of 'poo' in cycling terms. Plus you *will* look silly, and have teenagers pointing and laughing.

Ok thanks for your thoughts, what 'decent' bike can I get for around 200squids, one of the reasons I thought of getting one is I don't have 500 or 600 to spend on a proper bike.

Imlach, hybrid link isn't working which bike was it you were looking at?

Quite like the idea of a single speed cruiser (3 speed like the chopper) as I want to get fit and get round town easily but don't want the hardcore look like a racer. I was sure santa cruz/kona did these a few years ago but can't find any now.

Any recommendations?

lol- if you are really mentally ill then i'm sorry for laughing.

those are MAD.....EVERYONE will laugh at you, kids will laugh at you, adults will laugh.....some kids will throw things at you.

its cool to be different but try going for socks with a cartoon character on them.....less people will laugh at you.

T

ps- did i mention that ppl will laugh at you?

pps- the chopper is no longer your worst idea

It's just not the same without the proper banana seat, or the proper gearshift. That's what made it special in the 70's, and without those things, it loses its appeal slightly.

The 'new' seat just looks like a huge normal saddle, with another bit of foam padding forming the backrest. No no no, just not right.

I guess it is so different to the current trend (mountain bikes) so as to grab attention as the original did in the 70's.

Difference is that the original in the 70's was a pastiche on the Easy Rider inspired motorbikes......the whole point of it in the 70's was to give youngsters that 'motorbike' image.

Therefore, the noughties equivalent should be a chav-style scooter/moped impersonation that makes a 2-stroke style racket, and has burberry paintwork?

Cool

Yep thats the thing about the chopper, if you had one when you were a lad they seemed huge, now looking at them, or sitting on one (Ive got 2 70s ones) they are a little on the small side! Still if you want to get noticed thats what you ride But me Im a 70s style freak and getting worse

@ Spoon

I had a chopper when I was a kid, and my dad binned it whilst I was away at uni He could kick himself now, if I hadn't already kneecapped him

Seriously though, if you wanna get fit, get a mountain bike there are loads for sale 2nd hand within your price range. Anything with only 3 gears is going to p!ss you off before to long, unless you live in them mud flats between Derby & Calais
