Is it 10% + VAT = 27.5% ?

I thought it was 16% plus VAT not entirely sure.

depends upon the commodity code of the item you're importing

As mentioned above it depends on what you are importing, you can use the website to find commodity codes.

Make sure you give them someone else's postcode, though
FWIW, for cars AFAIK it's 10%. But it's cumulative, so it's not 10%+17.5%=27.5%. It's *1.10*1.175=*1.2925, i.e. 29.25%.
