Scottish property
A question for all you Scots..
How much would you have to pay for a detached property, 1 or 2 bed that is situated anywhere around the coastline. The only stipulation is that it must be a nice area and have access to a post office within a few miles.

try checking here for a start
bit of an open question though
between £50,000 and £350,000 depending on which desirable area your bit of chosen coastline happens to pass through
seriously though, the East Neuk of Fife is an up and coming area with prices starting to go a bit daft so Fife may be your best place to start a search...think they've got post ofices there too
PS We're still working on electricity and running water though

Rosyth is fine, if you want to be handy for a nuclear submarine breaking yard, or live in one of the areas of Scotland with high unemployment (and hence all that goes with areas like that).
I think your idea of a coastal town is perhaps not Rosyth. You'd probably prefer areas like Anstruther, Elie, etc on the east neuk of Fife. Prices to match mind, £200k may be likely for a 2 bed mid-terraced cottage right in the middle of one of these romantic fishing villages. Reason for these prices is the influx of wealthy 2nd home owners sadly.

Here's a nice one in Elie - o/o £329k, so expect to pay £350k-400k.

Or a more affordable one (but a semi) in St Monans at o/o £155k - prob likely to go for over £200k this one.

My boss lives in Elie and winter population is around 500 people and summer population is circa 6000
All due to people with 2nd homes.
Bein an active member of the community he's always amazed when people arrive in the summer demanding a Fayre day and summer sports day to be organised for their benefit
Bit sad really to see these villages empty in the winter.

The East Neuk now has tourism as one of its major employers, so it will mean a seasonal population. There's not much other industry in the East Neuk, and I suspect without tourism, there'd be little reason to live there. The 2nd home owners will bring cash to the area. It's a question of balance I guess, and perhaps some way of ensuring those serving the community manage to get to live in it. How this is done is very difficult.
I guess the goverment are going some way to address this with the proposed removal of relief of council tax on 2nd homes. This at least ensures that 2nd home owners contribute fully to the community they occassionally live in.

When you see a price for a property, how much above that price does it typically sell for? What about right up the top where all the ginger people come from It's got to be cheaper up there? I'm thinking of a castle (with cannonball damage) for about £100k

HAHA - a castle for £100k - dream on. Common misconception about the price of property up here. A castle recently sold on Harris for £7m. Harris is one of the Western Isles, and is nearly as far north & inaccessible as you can go. You should be able to get a nice stone detached cottage with a couple of bedrooms for £100k in the far north though.

As an example, check out this website for properties in the Western Isles and surrounding area. Bit cheaper.
