DV4000 Cams (DV4000 Digital Video Camera)

The problem with describing fabulous little gizmos like the Mustek DV4000, is getting across the feel of the thing. Affordable mini DV Cams have been around for a few years, and they are constantly improving the spec and usability of them, but this is the first one we've seen (and felt) that truly has that "this feels more expensive than it is" feel.

It's a really solid little number, and when we say "little" we mean it - it'll fit easily into your top pocket without making a dent. Not only has the build and feel improved, but the functionality has increased tenfold and it has a really user-friendly interface. As well as being a nifty little DV Cam, it also shoots high resolution photographs (up to a fantastic 4 Megapixels), is an MP3 Player (a real 'WOW' first for DV Cams), a Digital Voice recorder, a Web Cam and a card reader (SD & MMC). It comes bundled with a starter 32MB MMC card and is upgradeable to 256MB, so you can store photographs, music and computer files on it. It has a built-in battery charger, and takes a standardised lithium-ion battery the same as a Nokia phone, a great plus. The flip out TFT screen is clear and sharp, and it comes with a whole heap of great software, making this DV4000 the cream of the crop when it comes to affordable pocket sized multi-media devices. If you're feeling techie have a look through the specs below, as well as at what the kit includes, and we think you'll be impressed.

There are of course other DV Cams on the market, but in our opinion Mustek are way ahead of the field when it comes to price, specifications, usability and build quality. The DV4000 is a truly excellent piece of kit.

US Customers please note you will need to buy an electrical adaptor and transformer for this product (UK mains power is 240V and US mains power is 120V, and thus you need a transformer to adapt from one to the other). We don't sell these items, but fortunately these can be bought very easily (and we're told, very cheaply) from your local electrical store.

European Customers will require an electrical adaptor only, which can be purchased at your local store. (For local people, of course.)

Nate.
I've just ordered a new camcorder from here:
RGBDIRECT.CO.UK
as they were the cheapest place I could find - the JVC GC-DX97 is £473.21 inc VAT & DEL

For info I used the Simply DV Forums

oh, and DONT buy from the US or Canaries!

Just before you order one of these, please not that the picture quality is NOTHING like what a real DV camcorder will do. The way these cameras are marketed is a bit of a con. MPEG4 it may be, but don't let that blind you into thinking it gives good video quality! A webcam can do MPEG4 yet you wouldn't use that to record your prescious family moments.

Remember, MPEG4 is a compression technology, NOT a video quality standard.

This "dv" camcorder does not adhere to the Mini-DV standard which is what a proper camcorder does (ie, 520 line near-broadcast quality video).

imlach,

after reading the spec ... I could see it is good for short videos , but at that price, I wouldn't expect too much from it ..... I now have a JVC GR-DX97 on order.

cheers

Nate.
