Dog 'smiling' - Why??

Dog 'smiling' - Why??
I have a year old Jack Russell bitch and she has recently started 'smiling' at me when I come in from work. She curls her muzzle back to show me her front teeth! This is accompanied with the usual howls of excitement, manic tail wagging and leaps to kiss my face (which usually end up in a headbutt if I'm not quick!). She only started doing it recently, and so far it only seems to be when I come in after 8 hours away at work. My parents are in most of the day, only leaving her for 2 hours maximum, so she isn't lonely. I'm guessing that this is a submissive greeting of some sort, as I have seen other dogs do it in the past, but I was wondering what the origin of it is? Did wolves do this to their alphas in the wild, and why?

She was spayed a while ago so shouldn't be a season and I can't get her to smile for long enough for a picture! She does like posing in her new teeshirt though...

Gorgeous dog! I love Boxers, I love all dogs really! Thimble would have a field day if your boxer is as mad as I'm assuming. Though Thimble, who is a whole foot high, does manage to scare Alsatians. No, I don't know how she does it either, but one snap and glare and they run away crying!

and leaps to kiss my face
What is it with dog owners and hygiene, eh
Still, look on the bright side - at least it's a bitch, could have been a dog and licking its bo11ocks beforehand too

Would you believe that this angellic looking little pup took 3 people holding her down to get a muzzle on her at the vets the other night? I know the idea of having your butt squeezed isn't fun, but still! :embarrassed: She was fine going to the vets the other times. She ate too much lino once and had a sore belly, but behaved herself. She ran headfirst into a door and bruised a disc, but behaved herself. Maybe this time she decided she didn't need to be seen by the vet and made it known she was fine and healthy! I love her to bits though.

Sorry the pics arent working, I think I've used up my bandwidth for the week!
It's definitely not agression, she's never been aggressive. If she grabs you when playfighting she actually spits you out! I think it's a bit of a greeting, I just want to know if dogs do it in the wild!
Thimble got slapped by a cat, she wasnt impressed. She's also scared of very tall people and toddlers. But not Alsatians. Odd dog.
Yes she likes her teeshirt! I think that's why she got all attitudy at the vets!

She is smiling cos she is happy to see you. Dogs do smile! Maggie the weim has been known to smile on occasion, tis hard to tell, as usually she's madder than a mad thing with mad bits so is happy. Dead cute when she does smile though.

Those are fantastic pics!
Thimble wasn't much impressed with crufts, but she did perk up when the terrier group came on, naturally.
She was mesmorised by the video of her from christmas though. Mum and Dad finally figured out how to get the camcorder onto the tv and Thimble she looked very good in her Christmas pink net tutu...

I wish I had the camera with when I was at the vets a couple of nights ago. There was the most fantastic 10 week old Bulldog puppy there. Your heart would have melted. I could have quite happily of walked out of the surgery with it under my arm
