Getting Married in Kenya in July on Safari or Beach :-) :-)
rite, went away for a nice little weekend break in the Cotswolds last weekend with my better ½
the upshot being i asked her to marry me on saturday evening !
and she said yes !
we were already planning a holiday in late june / early july which we've now decided will be where / when we get married.
anyone got experiences of kenya generally........best places / areas to stay ? anyone been married there or know anyone who has ?
we're hoping to do a weeks safari and then a week at a beach resort. not sure which way around to do this or which one would be best / nicest for the actual wedding......
all help appreciated......
cheers
Steve

Whirlwind romances They're great! Still deserves a congrats though!
Although I have never been married, on a beach or a safari, never been to Kenya, I'd say the beach

Been to Kenya, my cousin lives in Nairobi. Been to Tsavo, Lake Nivasha and Mombassa to name a few places.
Tsavo is a "safari camp", you are under canvas but it is very civilised. Proper beds, walls up to 3ft high then the tent on top. Little wooden veranda out the front. Nice restaurant with good food and a swimming pool.
I would avoid any cities to be honest, and sort as much cash out the first time you get some as you can, service is dire over there, took us 4.5 hours to cash a travellers cheque in a Barclays in Malindi.
Mobassa has a heavy Arabic influence but like all the cities is scruffy. If you can get in at the Mombassa club that is worth a visit, air con in the rooms and very "Colonial" Gin and Tonic on the veranda with waiters in white jackets etc!
The beaches are nice, better in the South around Milidi as they are less commercial. Around Mobassa you will get hounded by beach traders. Lots of hotels there as well on to the beach and most people stay in the Hotel complex to avoid the traders.
Personally I'd go for Tsavo or some other safari as everything is there. With the beach it would be a case of swatting the traders away, getting married and then dashing back to the hotel, either than or you rent a house / appartment, but that depends on how many people will be there.

Shop around for flights - they are not cheap! It is 8hrs plus as well so take the bandages to stop the DTV!!
If you want any more info on places out there I can see (can't promise) if my Cousin can sort anything out (she is a bit dizzy), she works for a Kenyan tourist magazine out there.

Congrats Steve!!
My other half proposed to me after 3 months and then we got married 4 months later in St Lucia, and i can totally relate to what you were saying about the shocked faces of your relatives when you told them! My relatives faces were hilarious!!!
If you do fancy a beach holiday though, we went to St Lucia and i would recommend it to everyone. Beaches are great, all the water sports under the sun and most importantly, all inclusive therefore FREE BAR!! Oh and it was couples only so no screaming kids everwhere!
Anyway, i wasn't exactly helpful on the Kenya discussion, but i hope it all goes well and lets us know when you've booked somewhere!!

Oh - and you will need anti-malaria treatment (as well as Yellow Fever, Typhiod and various others), especially near the coast. For goodnes sake don't let them give you Larium, the stuff is awful. Effective it may be, but the side affects are horrific. My stomach was "not right" for nearly 8 months after and my Uncle was suicidal.

Yeah they are great fun. Can't remember which jab, but one of them can give the effects of flu a few hours after, lasts a couple of hours - that was weird!

Dont go to nai robbery mate its not nice at all.....
i was over there last year climbing mount kenya for charity..... lovely lovely area mount kenya national park.... plenty to see and right on the equator. The people are un-believably friendly and go out of their way to help.....This is not the case in the cities though.
If you stay in nairobi for a night or two though stay in the 'new stanley' hotel.... a little haven in the middle of a scary place.
Go climb a mountain with her mate, nothing more romantic than nipping behind a rock with an ice pick at night to have a dump.....haha...seriously though mount kemya = snow capped mountain right on the equator, very eerie and much much much nicer than the tourist trodden killimanjaro
