Cockle Pickers

Cockle Pickers
The Morecambe Lifeboat crew have been quoted as saying that gangs of immigrants, up to 500 people, frequently pick cockles and was an accident waiting to happen. Why the **** did the police and immigration not round them up? They are as much to blame as the smuggling gangs. It also said that a number of the survivors have since claimed political asylum.

I was thinking along the same lines ...
The locals have been complaining about them for a while according to the media. It could of ended up without anyone been dead if they acted accordingly and sent them packing back home or dealt with the issue instead of ignoring it for whatever reason. A waste of life as well IMO

TBH, i'm not at all suprised it's happened. There is quicksand all over the place, and the tide comes in very quickly. They get people trapped at the best of times.

i bet the police would have done something about it if they were driving the cockle-wagon too fast.
known immigrants being exploited by crims and waiting to die ... nah, too much trouble ... they'd have to build a case.

tell me somthing new,,,
i was nearly killed by a bloke who fell asleep at the wheel , if i hadnt grabbed the wheel we,d have hit the oncoming car!!!!!!!
why????
hed been working with me the day before,,,, turns out he was part of a crew who worked picking crops, and had been drafted into give the people i worked for a hand..
hed worked with me until 8pm the night before then gone and cleaned a factory until 4 am then was back on the road at 6am to do another days work..
the company i worked for had a contract to collect items and unload deliverys frm abroad,,,
it was tragic, i had to pick 16 workers out of about 30 people who had been sent by this company,,,
some who i picked asked if i could take someone else because they had earnt enough money to pay the rent to the local (company ) who employed & housed them, and some of the others who i hadnt picked hadnt,, earnt enough
the annoying thing was most of them were just here backpacking or working there way around the country, and they were being exploited
suffice to say i left shortly after,,

Er, I work in the IT branch in another force area, not exactly my area of expertise warning people not to go Cockle fishing in Morecambe, besides at my level I dont get paid overtime, just aggro. I was pointing out that it was obviously a big issue if we were involved on behalf of Lancs Police, thanks for the vote of confidence.
If people insist on going out on Morecambe sands, there is nothing the Police can do, its a free country, I remember from my last visit, the quicksand issue and tides are well known and signposted. Despite the current climate, you can be responsible for your own actions and the consequences therof.

cest la vie, will I lose sleep?
No. Well I can't sleep anyway but if I could I wouldn't.
Its all natural selection, survival of the fittest. Why can't other people see this??!
