just trying to sort out cds and albums - most of them are all over the floor at the moment. now the question is, should they just go into alphabetical order by artist, or should they be divided into dance, rock/pop, classical, jazz etc? what do you do with multi-artist compilations? can these questions ever be satisfactorily answered?

PG - that would defeat the object. i like having them around. although i have considered getting them onto a big hard disc, for the sake of convenience. too much work ripping them all, though.

Alphabetically by band name (ignoring The, A prefixes etc.) or artist's surname (subsorted by first name for artists with same surname).
CD's/LP's from the same band/artist in order of original release date (earliest first)
All compilations filed under V for various artists sub-sorted by CD/LP title (ignoring A, The prefixes etc.).
I know - I'm sad

tiggers - that's the way i'm going at the moment (nearly finished C so far) i am lumping jazz in with everything else as there's too much cross-over. however, classical is getting its own section. i was also going to have an "electronica" section but again, too much cross -over. aphex twin is easy enough, but what about underworld, what about st. etienne?

I file them in autobiographical order Sorry, just watched High Fidelity
Mine are arranged in my own chaotic order, if I could be bothered, I'd stick them in alphabetical order, but I can never be bothered too. At some point I'll rip them to my Mac and let iTunes deal with the ordering

PC,
Yeah I used to subdivide across the genres, but like you say to much crossover now. Classical as you say has it's own section - not a big classical fan so kind of forgot about the few I do have filed away.
Keep up the good work mate!
tiggers.

I spent the time and ripped all my CD's to MP3 and just share them on my home network.
I still have the CD's in a cabinet as it's good to have friends looking through your collections. I've sorted them in Alphabetical order (used the MP3 list to help with that one).
I'm not sad enough to work out genres or listed by release dates As long as I can find them, I'm happy
Stefan

PMSL @ Huxley I use the chaos method for my collection as well - the current favourites are in a small pile on top of the CD player, the rest are stored in the CD rack in whatever order (roughly) that I bought them.

don't get me started on MS Access - just in the process of ridding my office of Access dbs - going to php instead.
i think there gets to be a critical mass with records beyond which it really is hard to find stuff if you don't have some kind of order. i've turned up stuff i had forgotten i even bought. i didn't sort them out properly after we moved about a year ago.

Some of mine are filed by genre, some are by artist, others by label, remixer or sleeve type.
I can fine anything pretty quickly but I'd imagine anyone else having a nightmare locating a track.
I've got a couple of thousand logged in a MySQL database and I log all the new ones I buy but I've a large amount that need inputting.

The problem with filing them so neatly in alphabetical order is that when you buy a new CD, you have to waste a fraction of your life moving the rest of the discs down 1 slot in the rack to make room for it.
