They had to find another "mate" in the region now Saddam is out of the picture.
When is the UK and USA going to scrap its WMD programmes, we do have the largest stockpiles on the planet of this crap.

Gadhaffi took one look at what America was doing to Iraq and thought sod that for a game of soldiers and decided he would rather cooperate and come forward than wait in line for his turn. Hence the last 9 months of negotiation.
As far as I am concerned thats only a good thing. The middle east is riddled to the core with terrorists and to have one more nation from that region cooperating means a now smaller (albeit only marginally for now) net for the terrorists to operate from.
