Can anybody tell me what the area of Thorplands is like?
I know that Blackthorn is not that far from it and is a dodgy area, but is Thorplands far away enough to be better?
Just wondered as I will be looking at a house there.
I am currently over the other side in Duston, where there seems to be increasing groups of teenagers hanging around.
Thanks.

I'll leave out what I really want to write and just say.....
Drive along the A43 from Riverside towards Kettering........whatever is to the right, I would strongly advise against looking at property there.
Or get a map and scribble that bit out.

Davyboy,
Please give me an honest view, even if you have to mail it.
I agree with your right side of the A43 and refused to look there a few years ago when I first moved up.
I drove to the particular street and it looks fine (or is that an illusion).
Will be back on Saturday for the actual viewing.
I have a deadline of just before the end of January to find a new home.
Daz, Most of Duston isn't a dustbin really.

If you know the postcode, look on www.upmystreet.com. There is sometimes some useful stuff on there.

Nicci, Thorplands would be a mistake, like Davy said, most area's to the right of the A43 wouldn't be classed as desirable.
Where do you work? budget etc and I'll try and help out
I know what you mean about the "youths" round near you, they might not be doing anything wrong but seeing groups of 6-10 lads hanging around can be very disconcerting

Unfortunately all places have these problems with youths hanging round shops etc.
I used to do it where I grew up - and that was in a desirable village.
They will move on - and on the whole they are not a bad bunch, the same lads who make a noise outside the shop had a new business scheme on Tuesday.....singing xmas carols PSML.
Hooded tops, baseball caps.....thought I was about to get my car stolen! They earnt 50p for there efforts.

Both of these estates are pretty rough, i am sure there are decent people who live there but there is a lot of crime there. They are close to Bellenge which is a real sink estate IMHO.
I worked in Little Billing for a while, the offices where regularly being or attempted to be broken into by local 'yoofs' from these areas according to the Police. Theses estates would not be my first choice.
They are however cheap to buy property on or near. seen three beds going for 70K, average in northampton is around double that.
Ther are rougher areas but not many. I supose it depends on your budget as much as anything but i would not live there through choice.
This is MY honest and humble opinion.

I will be renting and not buying, as I can't get back into the housing market.
The Upmystreet review was good, which is what confused me as I thought the area was bad (even though i had never been over there until the other night). The houses in the street look private.
I will be moving with b/f who does not know the area and cannot see why the area is bad when it looks ok.
I dont want to be worried about my car or getting burgled (house does have a garage).
I am looking all over the town for properties and supposed to be ignoring the dodgy spots.
Matt, I work in Boughton, wouldn't mind living there

What about taking a look at Mawsley village. Not far from boughton via back roads & I think not to badly priced.
Quite new development so should be fairly quiet.

Nicci, I would strongly recommend NOT moving to Thorplands. As said above, nothing to the right of the A43 dual carriageway or Eastern District as it is also known. (originally the "over flow" from London 20+ years ago).
Would also steer clear of the Mounts in town centre.
When you view any property, if outside of work hours, look around at all of the cars in the area. Are there a lot or many fairly "newish" cars, maybe 3-4 years old? It gives you an indication of what the area is like.
(I'm no snob by the way, I, like many others value the things that I have or am paying for! And I have seen the fence from both sides!)

I just got b/f to read this thread, he said:
'I feel a little put off reading what the others say, but I am not entirely convinced. I have lived in many areas that I have been told to avoid and have been fine. I have lived in areas that I have been told are good and have been ripped off...'
Just to add that I did a car insurance quote for current and Thorplands address, the Thorplands was just under £50 more per year.
More proof the area is not good.
