Question

Just built conservatory to use as office and kids study room. Didn't even think about light levels although all windows have lightweight blinds and it has a tinted roof. Moved a couple of PCs into conservatory and it's so bright, even with blinds down, that I cannot read monitor/s. Any obvious answers (no jokes about working after sunset pleeeease) apart from getting thicker/better blinds (£650)? I did try covering monitor sides and top with cardboard to try and keep out some light but this was a total failure. Thanks in advance. David

Cool

Quality sunglasses, Oakleys or similar should reduce the glare considerably.(Plus you'd look cool ) Don't know if it would be enough though.

Either move the PCs out, or only use them after sunset.

Polarised screen for monitor should cut out a lot of the glare.

Look cr*p though. Knock the conservatory down and build it properly.

You can get those gauze/mesh things that some people put on monitors. May help (they look like a really fine mesh, you'll be able to get them at most pc/stationery places.

Until then, try moving the monitors so the light source is behind them.

Question

Paint the screen light grey - that should do the trick !

Polarised screen is your best option

I assume you've played around with the Contrast settings of the monitor !

You could also try the windows screen settings to one of the OLD Hi contrast ones !!!!

Get the windows 'pimped' by applying some blackout window film. The neighbours might think you've gone nuts, or something dodgy is going on, but it's cheaper than brickin 'em up AND you will see your PC monitor screens!!! mmmmm....as for a sensible reply, I'm not sure what to advice.

Good luck

Use LCD panels. The newer ones are much brighter than CRTs, and they look cool too! LG L1800PK, 18.1" panel, 1280x1024 with tilt/swivel base, ~£390 + VAT.

Get one of the 3 panel board things that women strip off behind in films, that would keep thieving eyes off too

Failing that just chuck a thick sheet over you and the monitor...it'll keep you warm too

Put a tent up in your conservatory ?

Seriously, try placing the monitor 90 degrees to the light source. That way the screen isn't lit directly and also isn't backlit which is just as bad.

But to be honest, I really think you are onto a loser especially if your conservatory is south facing.

Cheers

Thanks guys - seems we are getting somewhere now that sn kids have gone to bed!!

If it's cloudy tomorrow I'll look through this thread and come up with a cunning plan. Or not.

Funnily enough I run a small marquee hire bus' so I could put a marquee over the conservatory but that would rather defeat the object!!!

mj - LOL. In fact I did plan (note Tiggs please) my desk so that I could overlook my pond and waterfall. I am currently trying to fathom out how I can reproduce waterfall sound into my office - as it is relaxing - any sound engineers out there with ideas; need to be fairly wireless as I've had my fill of cable digging for this year. Lcd monitors are a big improvement in that direction and they are more restful on the eyes too.

Go for some heavier / darker blinds, or even blinds over the polycarb roof panels (you can get electric ones but they're not cheap) You could also experiment with re-arranging the furniture, etc. My mum and dad have a big conservatory and had the same problem. So she bought a laptop and uses it in the kitchen !

Have you tried wiring Broquets into the monitor's power supply?

Thanks for sensible posts chaps. Don't get the hippie comment though?? Nice and cloudy today so did manage some work!

Brendan - good to see another IQ 10+ emerging . I hadn't thought of that so will give it a try - silly me had attached them to the PC power supply instead. BTW I'm told they are an excellent cure for Farmer Giles - would you like me to install one?
