Need to get a bike for everyday use and to improve my general fitness.
Don't know what to get...... Road bike or Mountain bike.

A good racing bike is a thing of beauty and well worth having - so much faster than even a slick-shod MTB it's not true. Then again, an MTB is better in a town situation for quick direction changes, and the brakes are both more accessible and more effective.
Are you really going to use it, or will you just let it rot in your shed? If you're honestly going to use it then get something nice, otherwise get a s/h job and see how you get on during the winter.
Edited to sday - this assumes you'll not be using it offroad?

It's fairly simple as I see it....
If you like dressing up in Lycra and shoving a Razor Blade up your Jacksy then Buy a Racing bike....
If you want a multifunctional bike for general fitness and a bit of enjoyment on and off road then a Mountain bike is the way forward.
Here's the rub.... Don't go Full suspension unless you have a Grand + minimum to spend..... Don't fall for the heavyweight Halfords special hanging up in the Porch area of your local store..
Buy a Hardtail with a front shock.... aim to spend £500 ish for a good quality fairly lightweight machine and you won't look back.
Watch out for Cheap Cable Disk brakes too.... Trust me they're not worth a W@nk.... Avoid the gimmics at that price range...
On the other hand if you want to go mad and get a propoer full susser then let me know, between me and the other 1000's of MTB'ers on here we'll really confuse you
Best of luck

Won't go far wrong with a Rock Hopper,
May be worth checking out a few Of the Kona deals in Halfords though (Despite the fact that I previously warned you of the perils of Halfords).
Since Halfords took KONA on board their buying power has had a few cracking deals float to the top...
I don't know where you live but I always use "Wildside" in Tunbridge wells...
They always do cracking deals on Bikes that are just about to be up-graded...
I got a Top Spec 02 Marin Attack trail at the begining of this year for £1600.00 reduced from £2300...

ROAD BIKE, ROAD BIKE, ROAD BIKE!!!
I made the switch two years ago and never looked back. SO much faster, SO much more comfortable! They are so pure, and so precise. It's like owning your own little Ferrari or Ducati
You gotta see the light!

Agree with Butkis
Unless you are going to go off road, get a road bike.
And some padded cycling shorts
Start off with a few short rides to get your **** acclimatised to it.
It really is a whole different experience. The feel and responsiveness of a good road bike is a million miles from a mountain bike.

I have a nice carbon Giant racing bike and a Cannondale M600 MTB and for quick runs down to the shops the MTB wins but anything more than a couple of miles I will take the road bike.
It really is horses for courses. The road bike is great for speed and ease of riding but there is alot to be said for a wee forrest run.
Depends on the types of terrain around you.
