Also, there is a silver one now ......... I can't find out what it does different?? Improved DVD operation and NO firewire connector.
What do you reckon? its £10 more? would it be better to buy a stand alone DVD and just treat the PS2 as a games console??

I'm thinking of getting one for two reasons alone: driving games and DVD playback.
Amazon sell a region-free package that looks quite good. Go to Amazon and search for "DVD Region X"; costs a tenner and for £19 they'll sell it with a remote control unit, too.
So, what decent driving games are there? Gran Tourismo 3 springs to mind. Any Touring Car games currently?

Forgot to ask; what's the Firewire connector for anyway? I know the format can be used to connect hard-drives, camcorders etc with PCs and Macs, but what is there in the PS2 context?

No idea about the firewire connector??
Best Driving Game? I would guess Colin McCrea 4!!
Game have offered me PS2 + F1 2003 + Hulk for £140 THEN I can have a free platinum game (Medal of Honour, maybe?) a Memorycard for £15 and money off the second-hand games I want ... if bought at the same time!

all the new ones have better dvd playback, quieter fans, will play DVD+/-RW, have the IR receiver built in for DVD playback (just need remote or all-in-one), and have the firewire removed. the firewire was only ever for link up games (not much used it).
So even the £140 ones are like this, but make sure the guy at game or wherever confirms its a new model.

Pete,
You need a Game Cube at your time of life. The games load much faster than the PS2 (which you can go away from to make a cup of tea while you’re waiting ), this means that you won't waste your precious time that you have left..
The graphics are better on the CG too.

I've just bought an X Box (£120 - no game), and it's excellent! CMR4 was £28. Gamestation have loads of games 2nd hand too (for the PS2 as well).

I got it to fill in the gaps in my empty life...
Cheers!
