Favourite/worst track circuits
#2
Only done 3 so far, On the Bike Mallory full circuit (which I did on Tuesday)is my favourite, Donington isn't.
Reason is that Mallory is short and you get plenty of laps per session to practice the lines. Donington on the other hand is very hilly, takes a long time to remember where the tracks going as its a big track, and has a couple of blind summits which can be scary if you can't remember which way to hang off.
I fancy doing Oulton park and Brands next year.

My order of preference:
Zandvoort (by a long, long way the best circuit I've ever driven)
Brands (full GP, dangerous and challenging)
Bedford (flat but challenging and rewarding)
Donington (a bit of everything - excellent)
Oulton Park (full GP - using the chicanes)
Snetterton (very fast and very slow - punishes the car and driver)
Cadwell (excellent circuit - poor facilities)
Silverstone (fast and will catch the unwary)
Croft (Liked it in the wet - suspect its a bit tame in the dry)
Knockhill (surface was bad when I drove, better now)
Oulton Park (clubman)
Brands (clubman - saved from relegation by Paddock hill)
Anglesea (fun but short)
Assen (fast, flat, very little run off)
Castle Coombe (fast, boring)
Any airfield (boring, destroy tyres)
Not driven:
Goodwood
Mallory
The two that I haven't driven appear to be squares with the corners rounded off and don't appeal to me.
I also have never done the Ring. I fully expect it to be the single finest track in the whole world, but I suspect that either I would get so addicted to it that I would spend my life there, or I would crash. Most likely, both

1. Donington - brilliant, Craner Curves are excellent, - there on Saturday
2.Silverstone - International - nice length, need to concentrate, round the back by Abbey etc quite technical and you can alway do better round there!
3. Snetterton - Coram makes it
4. Oulton Park - only driven once, but a good circuit
5. Silverstone national - not that difficult to drvie but good a nice enjoyable circuit - copse and maggots make it
4. Silverstone GP - v long and v tiring, I don't really like it
5. Mallory - ok, not esp memorable
Apart from that I can't be arsed to drive thousands of miles to Knockhill, Castle Combe etc, but I would love to try the 'ring and Bedford

The sad thing is that Brands, Oulton, Cadwell and Snetterton will be housing estates within 12 months
They are up for sale and the best bids are all from property developers.

I take it that You were only offered the oval circuit @ Mallory. The full circuit (with Edwinas and the Bus stop and has a few twists in it and Gerrards just goes on forever . Did you manage to time your laps there, and if so, what were you in/on ?

Funny, I really like castle combe - very quick, and the avon rise / quarry section has to be one of the most technically challenging sections of track in the UK (second to paddock hill?) It's probably dull in a powerful car as you dont _need_ to keep momentum through camp or the esses as much - it's a dull circuit if you driving slow in, fast out.
Anglesy is great fun, i'd put that high on the list. Donnington I'm not so keen on since i parked a car in tyres at the bottom of craners
I'm not really keen on goodwood - maybe you need a car with lots of power before it starts making sense?
I guess it depends on the car you're driving too - a massively powerful car at anglsey is as pointless as a low powered hatch at goodwood or thruxton (IMO...)

Ha! I'd just come on here to post a thread about my first track experience, which was today @ Goodwood . Never had a (track) session before but gotta say that I am now hooked - can't wait until I can get the Scooby out onto a track. I'd be a bit more confident to give it a go now that I've made it round a few times in someone elses car without breaking anything/myself .
I drove a Formula Ford 1600 single seater which was a bit of a sqeeze getting in (6'5" size 11's ) but once in there it just felt 'right', although I did think "now that I'm in here how the **** am I going to get out!". Did a few laps and started to get a bit more confident and push it a bit more each time, by the final lap it seemed like I was braking half way between the BRAKE signs and the corner (if at all ). I reckon the cars were probably restiricted as they wouldn't pass 6k rpm - even my Scoob is probably quicker - but it felt quite fast being so low down/exposed. Anyway, I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't tried it. This was one of those 'driving experience' presents someone got me ages ago.

Both in the RX-7:
Fav - Spa - everything I'd dreamed it'd be and more
Worst - Silverstone - random collection of corners that really should never have been joined up. Never like it in computer games, yet somehow managed to be worse in real-life.

No1 by a HUGE margin is the Nurburgring Northern Loop, it has absolutely everything a race track should have many times over. It's the ultimate challenge for car and driver both in terms of skill, memory and endurance. Shame so many muppets like to crash there which can close the track for hours at a time.
2nd is Spa, awesome in every way, it really rewards commitment and smooth driving, driving down towards radion is just nuts, but the whole track is very special.
I wont put the UK tracks in any particular order because i like them all for diferent reasons. They also change character depending on what type of car you are driving, some are easy in a subaru but really hard work in a fast car.
Special mention goes to Cadwell Park, Oulton Park and Donington Park though, if you are going to drive on track make sure you fit those in, all very diferent and all superb.

Eeerrr, what JF said
Seriously, Nordschliefe and Spa in one weekend is unbeatable for driving thrills.
UK ? Cadwell for me, followed by Dono
(strange seeing as I've crashed at both :O )
