Job Satisfaction Dilema
#1
ok guys what to do ?
job at moment IT related for an engineering firm :
Qualification not that much , been in the job for 12 years so its all hands on,
dilema : No Satisfaction and starting to lose interest.
Boss = "£$"££"$£ thinks he knows IT pokes fingers in , when it goes belly up , he runs out the door and muggins left to fix.
(moans and controls all the dough , unless its a new toy for him.
Cons :
Boss !!
Boss !!
Job Satisfaction
Stuck In A Rut (maybe wrong terminology)
Money = ??
Pro's
Get to spend a lot of time with family as basically zero commute
hours are standard and at my stage I can "drop and go" if need
money = ok (nothing special)
Scoobynet All Day
so basically ,
money is not all important to me but family time is, obviously we have financial commitments, wife works as well.
Where do I go , starting to feel tired in IT, fancy a new challenge , but what , where , how etc.....
this from a thirty something guy...... who is very happy with his family at moment, DO NOT want long hours and stuff like that want to spend time with junior if you know what I mean.
Suggestion , Observations appreciated
thanks
Jase

Think you have the same job as me. Have the same dilemma in so far as I have a niche skill, and could get a hell of a lot more money contracting. For instance there was one available the other day @ £500 per day plus all expenses(hotels).
Trouble is it would mean being away from Mrs, nipper and my beloved MOHAA 5 days per week

same problem for me, near zero commute, good money, dull dead end job.
however, my contract will expire in 6 months, at which point I plan to make a break for it...........for what though???

isn't there any way you can change jobs internally? is there no career path at the company you're at?
i would tend to err on the side of caution and stick with the devil i know. after all, you could change jobs, still hate it and have longer hours. unless of course another job offers a lot more money (unlikely if you're looking to change fields).
there is absolutely nothing to stop you from sending out your cv to some agencies and see what's out there tho.

no path available - i am top of the chain at the moment
i know its the better the devil you know, and it's funny to see a few people in the same boat as me,
only move will be a new company , god last had an interview 6yrs ago !!!!! (daunting)
even though still don't know whats out there and what i would be classified as.
Title in current workplace is "Computer Systems Manager"
basically cover
systems
comms (to an extent)
all purchasing/review etc etc
fault find pc front
build / rebuild
DR
60 plus machines / networked / 2 servers etc
generally a small company with t/o approx 12m.

Jase,
I posted a not-entirely-unrelated question a few weeks back here - most people seemed to think that staying in my current job without at least trying something completely different was a bad idea.
IT does seem to have taken a surprising nose-dive over the last few years and most people I know in the business are having a pretty hard time one way or another. Maybe if you (we?) stick with it then things will improve - it's just a question of how many days we're prepared to wait.
Me? I'm spending my spare time taking pictures...

You could have a go at doing what i did - bit risky though.
Asked permission to work only 4 days a week on grounds of long commute (81 miles each way), start small business from home working only on your day off from your regular job. Becarefull not to steal business from your main job and check your contract, otherwise you may end up in trouble.
Its going great for me, but not enough to quit my full time job yet.
Any one need any pcb's designing or any electronics engineering by the way???
James.
