Yes - there's a noticeable dearth of wine discussion on here.

good idea

zoog - mostly Southern Rhone, Burgundy and Claret, with a little Champagne, Rioja and other stuff. They are mainly odds and ends, only a small number of complete cases but if you add all the odds and ends up it makes about 360 bottles. I am sufficently sad to have compiled a spreadsheet listing everything. It is quite useful as the cellar is small and so most of the stuff is piled up in boxes. It's easy to forget what's there. Oh and some port as well. The rumaging was in order to make the spreadsheet - and also a sore back

S96 - Mail me and I'll give you the details of the guy that I bought it off. Just to clarify - I have no commercial interest in selling wine only non commercial interest in drinking it

MMmmmmm my fav subject ! I love Chilean Merlot. Has to be Chilean, nothing else comes up to scratch. As for whites... I tend to be one of those people who ruins them by adding soda and ice. I really don't like those oakey chardonneys that seem very prevelant at the moment.
BTW did anyone see Booze Cruise last night ?

Oops just realised...this is Apparition talking ... forgot I was on EB's puter ! He prefers Pepsi !

Question

Been rummaging around in the cellar today and was pelased to discover that there are about 30 cases down there. It got me thinking, would any local SN people be interested in some kind of informal wine club, or sharing notes online, or tastings. I have a friend in the trade who I could probably persuade to put on a tasting of his wares if there was a bit of interest.

Just a thought.

s_b: I do actually have a bottle of Blue Nun. It was a gift from a friend who was making an ironic comment on my wine "snobbery"

Sounds like a real treasure trove!

Once we've moved i m going to start laying down some wines, will need to get one of those electric cellar things as no real cellar unfortunately in the new property.

I always return to old world wines in the end after flirting with new world. Claret in particular. Must confess my wine drinking has suffered in terms of quality in recent years. Used to get lots of top stuff from the Christies auctions in the early and mid 90's when the Lloyds of London fiasco and the recession made the market relatively cheap. Not enough time to go to them now and expect the prices are much steeper.

A friend of my dad's goes to the sotheby's and christies autions about twice a year - he always phones me before hand and asks if I am interested in anything in the catalogue. it's still by far the cheapest way to pick up mature old world wines, but it's very variable. Sometimes there will be people who will bid silly money for wines they want (he claims they are russian mafia looking to launder money). I've had a look at the September catalogue from Sotheby's - one of the most awesome collection of burgundies I've ever seen in it. Unfortunately can't really afford to buy anything right now, and definitely not at the prices they are listing (e.g. 1990 Mersault: £1500 - £2000 per case; WTF?). OTOH last Xmas he picked up some good clarets for me relatively cheap. Still, prices are a lot dearer than they were in the '80s and early '90s when my old man was buying wine. Still - I enjoy it when I can.

I'd defo be up for learning some more about wine - love the stuff! Don't think we'll be in the position to be buying too much tho having just bought our first house. We do seem to have somewhere in the region of 60 bottles tho!

We're off to the Sunday Times Wine Club's 30th birthday wine tasting in October. Gonna be goooood! We went last year and had a fabulous time and bought some cracking wines. Looking forward to cracking open the first bottle of Tokaji Essencia soon. Anyone tried any? Tis the most amazing stuff I've ever drunk!

Ahh....Mersault - my fave white.

A case of Jospeh Matrot '84 cost me only £68 in May '95 from Christies, it was wonderful, despite the age. (I keep the auction catalogues!)

Telegraph has good wines too - still not got round to doing anything about either though. Wine never seems to stay around us long enough!

Question

Slightly off topic... Has anyone ordered wine off the internet? I have been contemplating cashing in my Nectar Points on the wine offers available, but have never ordered such a product on-line.

Plus, Virgin Wines are doing a £20 voucher off your first purchase, which seems a good bet too.

They seem to have clauses that they'll only deliver to your home, which is a bugger, because I'd be at work by then.

Has anyone used these services... are they okay?

Cin cin!

Duck.

Used Virgin, Laithwaites, Tesco and a few others with no problems.

Unless Virgin have changed something recently they'll deliver to other addresses.

Virgin wines is spiffingly good - yet to pay over £5.50 a bottle as I keep getting money off vouchers from them.

As I mainly drink young zippy whites they are ideal.

Mind-you if you can get me a case of cloudy bay I'll be well up for joining the club

Scooby96 - don't have any Sauternes but I do have another sweet white bordeaux that is as good as a minor Sauternes, and not too expensive.

wwsd - never had cloudy bay but it's not as hard to get hold of as it was. Would you like the Savignon Blanc or the Chardonay? (not sure that virgin do it for £5.50 tho')

I read about that Booze Cruise program - seems like a very flimsy pretext for a tv show.

For you WWSD:

We get loads of wine from Laithwaites, Sunday times, Telegraph, Virgin and it's always very value for money.

Answered the door to a courier with a case last week in my dressing gown (work from home and it was only 11.00am ) and he said "looks like you've been waiting for this", cheeky ******.

My mate has just passed his diploma in wine and he gets the really good stuff that he will occasionally throw my way

If you fancy Rose, that Blossom Hill White Zinfandel is really pleasant with a special taste of its own. I can certainly recommend the Cloudy Bay, bit expensive though.
