Hi all. Gardening supplies question for you lot.
Having got an allotment a couple of weeks ago, we've just found out this week that we've secured two more, which means we can dedicate one to just soft fruit.
We're going to plant one up almost entirely with strawberries, but want to plant through the water-permeable weed-suppressant membrane to make maintenance easier. We've found one place (http://www.geomatco.co.uk who do 100m x 1.5m for about £60 inc VAT and delivery, which seems pretty good.
Has anyone here ever bought the stuff in this sort of bulk (we need to cover at least 10m x 6m)? If so, where's the cheapest place to get it?

I've just spent many frustrating hours pulling the stuff up in my garden (it was all along the back, covered in gravel).
It is very good at stopping weeds but restricts the plants you want to grow - specifically our rhodededrons (sp?) and some ornamental bushes along the back. i.e. any plant that likes to spread by sending out runners is fecked - especially true in your case if you're looking to grow strawberries.
Even plants without runners seem to be choked as the main stem expands - I had to use a stanley knife to remove what were very tight sections of the stuff strangling the trunks of some of the bushes.
(NB our stuff is like a kind of carpet base which is therefore permeable but cannot be penetrated)

Gordo, don't worry we know how it works. We're not worried about runners etc., 'cos we'll pin them into pots to propogate new plants. We just want to be able to get a decent area of strawbs into the allotment without having to worry about weeding.
Not sure if there's Travis Perkins up in Scotland, but I'll have a search for plantex. Mind you, at the price you quote, the GeoMatCo stuff still works out a bit cheaper overall.

UB, WTF are you on about? How, exactly, is a poly-tunnel going to suppress weeds? If I was looking for polyethene for a poly-tunnel, then that's what I'd post about. I'm not - I'm posting for info about some weed-suppressant garden membrane.
You're clearly not a gardener - and obviously know as much about propagation as you do about MTBs.

Ouch.
MarkO, looks like a pretty good price you already have. We bought a load recently and it worked out at around 10p a metre more expensive than what you have got a price for. And we shopped about
Cheers

IWatkins - yea, sorry. It was a long day. The last thing I need is some jumped up tw@t like MarkO having a pop when I'm only making conversation.

LOL. Temper temper, UB. What's the matter - can't you even manage a bit of light-hearted banter in a gardening thread these days? Jeez, take a chill-pill geeza.
Sorry if I was a 'jumped-up tw@t', but the fact remains that when I'm posting about weed-suppresant stuff, and you go off on some irrelevant tangent about poly-tunnels, what did you expect?
Oh, and BTW, if you'd managed to keep a lid on your temper, and not started throwing your toys out of your pram, I was actually going to mention that in the last few weeks I've come around to your way of thinking and am seriously looking at going full-sus on my next bike (possibly something like an Orange Sub5), despite my previous opinions. But since you're being so tetchy, I won't bother.
