On the back of the V11 car tax renewal form, it says that in order to tax the car, you must have insurance on the car, or the insurance covers the car 3rd party. If it is unclear about how the car is covered, then you must explain how the insurance covers the car.

So if I have a car that I want to tax, but my insurance covers another car BUT it says on my insurance form that I can drive any other vehicle not owned by me or hired to me, can I tax the car?

Thanks.

No you can't. Second vehicle must be insured in its own right for the 3rd party extension of your policy to be valid.

The car that your insurance covers you to drive must be insured by someone. You policy just allows you to drive it without getting your name on the other insurance.

(Otherwise all scoob drivers would buy a Smart, insure it for a tenner and then drive the scoob.... heck - you don't even need to own the Smart )

I just want to tax the car.

I take it that if the car is parked on a public road, it must be taxed, however it doesn't need to be insured?

So if I take out insurance on the car, I can tax it but if the car doesn't have insurance I can't tax the car?

I thought they might have been a way to get the car taxed??

If the vehicle is parked on the highway it MUST be taxed and insured.

The vehicle needs to be insured in its own right by the owner/keeper/driver/company.
