RHODES - Take Sterling or Euros?
#1
Off to RHODES on Saturday for a final summer break. Any views on most economical way to take money? Obviously the CCard will cover restaurant bills etc. but should I take the rest in Sterling or Euros travellers cheques to get best exchange?
Cheers.

I discovered while in Portugal that most places now charge 5% to convert Euro travellers' cheques into Euros. What's happened is that they used to get people from all over Europe wanting to change their Deutsche Marks, Francs, etc. into Escudos, but now that business has dried up completely so they're looking at other ways of making money
5% is more than I get charged by any of my credit card companies (even my Lloyds debit card) for getting cash out of a cash machine. It's usually about 2.5% or no fee and a slightly worse exchanged rate. BTW I got a very favourable rate from Lloyds from my European transactions when I was paying with the cards in the restaurant, etc.

Watch the commision charges....... Ask them EXACTLY what they will charge on the AMOUNT YOU want to change. Its a great scam around the tourist resorts to make a massive charge.

Yeah found same problem in Italy in July. Big commision on Euro travellers cheque exchange. With regard the ***** comment, I thought they all holed up () in Falaraki. My Girlfriend and I are staying in Haraki which just a little quieter!
