Can a gas fire still be installed if there is no chimney?

We have seen a house for sale, but the chimnies have been removed.

Do I require a special gas fire?

You got to have some kind of route to the outside. it can be through an external wall rather than a chimney, but gas fire + no vent = carbon monoxide poisoning.

You can have a gas fire with a flue to an outside wall. Speak to British Gas or a decent sized local gas fire outlet.
Have a look here and here

very common they are called balanced flue gas fires and as long as the position is about 4 feet from any vent or window on an outside wall you can have them literally anywhere.

also fairly cheap and easy to fit.

compared to installing a chimnney at least

Fluless gas fires are becoming more popular now, they are basically a fire with a type of catylic convertor to clean the flue gases, so the answer to your question is yes you require a special gas fire that are availble.

powerflue - open front - ie can touch the coals
balanceflue - glass front.

both can be used without chimneys - but both need outlet to fresh air.

if not on an outside wall - go for electric - you can still have gas/coal effect.
