OK went to buy a new watch for the wife. Have seen a ladies "Tudor" submariner in stainless steel. Its in a good jewlers on Oxford street. Its a dicontinued (Just) model and it has been in the dispaly for a year. Very minor marks on the case rear and box set.
The manager wants to sell.... we want to buy!! But I fancy a deal. He has offered 10% off. I told him I would expect that anyway on a "Brand new watch" pain iin full etc. Agreed we would both think about it until monday. I believe the watch will not sell for ages if we dont buy it.....
I am going for 20%. Its still comes fully guaranteed etc and |I am no concerned about it...Just fancy saving some money...
Ive just lost a load ...she didnt like the other one I bought her!!

Luke,
Offer to take it off his hands for cost price (what he paid for it) plus 10%, assuming he can/will show you proof of cost.
Otherwise, start the haggling at half the advertised price and work it from there, but you want a minimun 25% off retail price.
And dont forget to blag him...
Tell him about the one you've seen at another shop thats just as nice but loads cheaper etc etc...
Good luck
Bob

Luke, all jewellers work on at least 200/250% markup I got told this from a family friend who has been a jeweller/antiques dealer for the last 40yrs. You should be looking for at least 25% as a minimum. If its been on display for that long tell him you know how long hes had it and that it is now a discontinued version etc.

For watches it is less.
It depends on the brand, but as a general rule the cost is probably between half and three quarters of the retail.
(I sell watches..... but not jewellery, and not Rolex/Tudor).
So a watch that is (cost) £200+vat, might retail for about £350 or £400 including vat...... so the mark up is not that great.
For a "prestige" brand, such as Tudor you could probably get it for about 25% to 30% off retail..... (as a maximum amount of discount) if you can do better then take it, you should get more than 10%, especially if it is an "older" model.
Ask why there are scratches on the back (of the watch?) as this may mean it has been opened..... and as such the waterresistence may be "compromised".....
