Hello,

I need to get away from things for a week or so, thought I might go camping. I'll be going on my own and bringing some sketch pads with me so I want somewhere picturesque (obviously ). I'll be driving so I'll need parking, but I want somewhere a bit out of the way and where I can light a small fire, I have no idea as to the legality of that.

Anyone got any ideas on places to go? I don't have to stay in one place. The driving possibilities might also be something to take into consideration

Cheers,
Steve.

Head to Pateley Bridge, North Yorkshire, then take the road to Middlesmoor. A couple of campsites along the way, the best being at Lofthouse.

The driving - well, if you take the road over the moors from Lofthouse to Masham (home of Theakstons) you'll have some fun.

Steve,

Got to be Scotland or the Lake District if you want remoteness and scenery.

I'm off wild-camping myself in a few weeks up near Ullapool

Deffo North Yorkshire as above - then head for east coast - they should rename it to North Twistyshire..

Snowdonia. Some breathtaking scenery there. If you like coastal scenes, then Cornwall.

Croyde bay on the devon/cornwall border, there is a campsite called surfers paradise, which is really easy going and a 5 minute walk has some of the most amazing views ive seen in ages, went a couple of years ago and was very very impressed.

Easy to get to, about 45mins/1hour from exeter so also good to get around to!

if you want more info PM me

HTH

Cheers chaps, lots of good info What about the legality of lighting fires, is it ok or does it depend on where one is doing it?

Cheers,
Steve.

I'd guess firelighting depends on the area, but as I understand it the UK's been quite dry recently, so you risk starting something you regret. If it's for cooking, would a cheap camping gaz stove do? Safer.

Yeah I have one of those camping gas stove things, but it's not as idyllic as a campfire

Instructions on how to build a campfire

A lot of campsites have purpose areas for campfires, but these can be crowded in popular sites. You can build your at your tent, but the golden rule is to leave the site more or less intact with not many signs of a fire ever being there.

If you find a large enough open area with no grass or plants (i.e. plain old dirt), then that'll cause less problems. If you pitch your tent on nothing but grass, you should ideally remove an area of turf ready to be put back in place once you've finished.

Most sites will have a policy on it - best ask.

Camping "wild" i.e. not on a site is not something I've done so cant be much help.....but be careful.

Yeah I'm not going to do anything without asking first, just wondered if there were any general rules about it. Asking when I get there is probably easiest, but twenty minutes ago I just got an invite to Sao Paulo ... hehe.

Cheers all,
Steve.
