Advice - mis-sold L.A.Fitness membership
#1
6 months ago wife joined new L.A.Fitness centre. I bought a new MTB (which I use twice a week.....guess how often the wife gets to the club? )
I was there when guy gave her sales blurb, but not when she signed up. He said she could pull out at any time with only a months notice.
6 months on we're moving ~ called to cancel and told by staff (and later confirmed by head office) that she's bought in to a 12 month contract They have agreed to let her leave for £200 provided she gives proof that she's moving out of the area!
Have not seen the membership document, but I assume it does indeed say 12 months minimum and we're stuck (?)
Any ideas?
1st plan of action is to explain to the local branch manager that we've been mis-sold the membership. If he doesn't like it I'll advise him that we're going to the local paper (since I also overheard sales guy telling a couple beside us that they could pull out at any time).
Do I have any other legislative recourse regarding mis-selling that may be more powerful?
Any advice welcome (although can we keep the Astraboy tradmark revenge schemes on the back burner at the moment please )

Is it a monthly agreement under which you signed a credit agreement?
If it is then you're obliged to pay as the cooling off period has well passed.

Cancel your direct debit and walk away. You'll never here from them again. Nearly all big chains of gyms try this, they never follow it up if you just leave. I've known LA Fitness do this, Esporta, and Top notch, none of them have ever bothered to chase people up.

True.
Cancel it and let them do the chasing.
For such a small fee they'll probably just write it off.
I had a similar thing with Fitness 1st who threatened me with legal recovery action but no action ensuid.
That was 4 years ago.

They did mention legal proceedings & credit blacklist when my wife suggested she would cancel her DD......I didn't think they'd pursue monies, but no idea what is involved in credit blacklisting......they just bluffing?

This might seem a bit "Astraboy", but walk naked into the sauna, p155 in the jacuzzi and blatantly shoot video footage in the female changing area. They're sure to kick you out and cancel your membership.
Sorry, I'm in a silly mood tonight. Good luck in your fight !!

Good thinking Corrodaboy, but it's not really Astraboy-ish as no-one is maimed or scarred for life emotionally
I had considered joining my wife at the entrance sporting "LAFitness Are C**ts" banners, but then that would be libelous as they are obviously simply thieving scheming dog g*bblers"
Only joking of course
