Ruining the Limehouse Link

I agree though I think the limit should be 40 as it is on Aspen Way. Much too much a temptation that tunnel...
4 of those killed were when their vehicle hit a traffic camera (not speed camera) at what must have been a terrific rate of speed just on the entrance from Aspen Way. Also have a look at the number of the white panels inside that have accident damage.

Wholly **** I don't even wanna admit to the speed I do through there on the bike, its a bit of a bike race way in there to say the least. Thats me slowed down tho, didn't see the thing there this morning, will look out for it on the way home.
And no definately no one keeps to the 30 in there including lorries and buses.

B2Z, im like you i used to race through there on the way to work on a sunday morning, roads empty and all that at 6am. If they stick one by the tunnel then they should stick them on the straight piece of road with the 2 big roundabouts leading to A13/A406 That is otherwise know as the Docklands race circuit. !! Those stretches are good for 0-60 + times. !!

Ipski I agree with you - the Limehouse link is just the pitlane for the whole Docklands kneedown extravaganza! I used to go out at 2 in the morning just for the hell of it - fantastic. ah well. The link itself clearly did result in a lot of deaths however as i saw loads of accidents on the way to work, so i guess maybe it makes sense...

puff knows the dragstrips and r'abouts well clearly tho they have gone and blocked off one section of one of the nice tight ones in the last few months. "parallel with the runway"...but with quicker traffic! slips over in pool of testosterone, nuts keyboard, passes out...

lmao at the comments.
Bike GP, pmsl, one evening not so long ago, getting a cab back to Romford with some mates, we hit the 0-60 + straight in a black cab, we was passed, by two insane bikers Wheelying (sp?) over 50-60mph past us and then just took off into the night, knees down at the roundabout and back for another lap the other way, great to watch, but Geeeeeeeeeeesus, Death Wish.
Best bit of going to work at the weekends was the going and coming home along that stretch of road and up into town.

Is George`s Cafe/Diner still on the silvertown way?
used to be an engineer on the A13 roadworks at Prince regents lane, we used to go to George`s cafe every morning for breakfast, best in the land IMHO..
As for limehouse, well, unfortunately I got my Scooby after leaving A13/PRL so was forced to use it on my CBR.. gutted...
Blackwall was good too, but the stale air made you feel sick before the exit

Puffy,
The accident you're referring to was due to a lad driving well in excess of the 40 on a space saver tyre. He lost control/had a blow out entering the westbound tunnel and hit the wall seperating the two tunnels. The engine block came to rest about 100 yards in the eastbound tunnel Four lives lost and a fifth seriously injured. I think about that accident everytime I go along that stretch of road.
Couldn't agree more, 30 MPH is an absolute joke. Maybe a veriable speed limit along there might help???

I think, if its the same accident I am thinking of, the driver was doing well in excess of 100mph from what I heard The car was totally destroyed and the occupants stood no chance.
The problem is if the tunnel didnt get filled up with traffic then it should be 50 mph through there.
The issue is that because of the traffic lights at the end of the west bound tunnel, traffic can suddenly build up, you can come round a corner in the tunnel and there be a huge traffic jam. Hence the 30mph limit in the tunnel. Its not got the best visibility due to it being a series of sweeping bends so therefore very difficult to know there is a build up of traffic round the next corner.
East bound there is never traffic built up and is always much faster coming throught the east bound tunnel than it is going through the west bound tunnel.

Hmmmm, let me think out loud.....
80,000 vehicles a day use the tunnel
assuming this level is only achieved on work days (i.e. 52 weeks x 5 days a week), that's 20.8m vehicles a year
Over 3 years, that's 62.4m vehicles through the tunnel.
14 accidents leading to 'deaths or serious injury' therefore equates to 0.000022% of journeys through the tunnel (i.e. 1 in every 4.5m)
assuming that speed was not the main factor in some of these accidents reduces this even further (i.e. poor lighting, poor visibility round corners for traffic jams, tiredness, drugs, alcohol, youthful exuberance etc), then speed in the tunnel suddenly doesn't seem too bad, does it?
Nope, sod it, we can make some money if we put some cameras in

However, put that in context of 4 per year & the k/d ratio for UK roads is 4000 per year (ok less) & that makes it one of the thousand most dangerous road places in the UK - prime spot for a SAFETY CAMERA - being used for what it is intended...
Can someone remember the cost to tax-payer (us lot mostly) for a death or serious injury due to motor accident? £1m per death iirc but if those cameras (?) stop those deaths per year, then I'll save a couple of quid

Has anyone seen this camera yet? I keep looking for it but cant see one in either direction. Thought it was already installed and they were testing it
I want to know as I seem to be the only one now doing 30mph or there abouts through there and everyone goes past me like i'm some sort of idiot holding the traffic up

The point about the risk being so low is very Valid and this 14 KSI is a way now used to mask the number of Deaths as in Essex amongest others death have risen with the introduction of wide spread speed camera use so they now quote KSI which is a much more acceptable figure as Injuries have gone down! (Maybe because they died in the great NHS?)
This low KSI rate for the tunnel combined with only 7.3% caused by excess speed (ABD Figures) prove that 1) the limit is incorrectly set and 2) there is no need to enforce the speed limit here but they would save more lives to investigate the other 92.3% of causes and rectify them first like the poor road design on the west end of the tunnel!
Now obviously this approach costs money for TFL and also hopefully improves the road for Drivers two points that under the current leader ship are not policy.
Also it would be interesting to see how many deaths there were by people legitamatly driving a road worthy vehicle in this period which were then caused by excess speed? i suspect not many or this figure would have been used in the media campaign instead of KSI. Don't forget TFL are employing Spin doctors to sell this to the public.
