Jury duty advice required please

What a carry on!
Was called up for jury service last Wed, 2nd July. Phoned on the Tue night to be told not required, phone again last night. Phoned last night to be told not needed today, phone Thu night.
Problem I've now got is I'm supposed to be going up to Orkney for a mates wedding on Friday, ferry etc booked.
Anybody know how I'd stand for exclusion - I thought I'd read that I'd need a medical reason.
Appreciate any advice, since I've left the paperwork at home.
Mike.

I take it you filled in the forms etc weeks ago to say that you were available for jury service?
My understanding is that you must be available with illness or extreme circumstances being the only excuse. I think you can be found in contempt of court in the extreme and be fined.
Its bloody boring I know but I would be prepared to go just incase.
Matt
ps there is a government website with all the info on somewhere

Cheers Matt,
the Scottish courts website was pretty useless, so finally managed to get through to the court.
They phoned back about 10 mins later to say that since I was going away and had the ferry booked I would be excused this time.
Now I'm an honest bloke, and I am going up to Orkney for a wedding, but no sort of checks were done. Makes you wonder how many stories folk give???

You're lucky. I had to do Jury duty about 4yrs ago in Hamilton. I had to attend court every day for that week and wait around until my name got called for a jury. Nothing until Thursday, then yours truly got collared. It was the last case and the other beggars got away.
Spent all day Thursdaym then on Friday afternoon the bloke changes his plea to guilty and we aren't needed. Complete waste of a week and boring as hell, but at least it got me out of work and home early for a change

If you write telling them that you are suffering from stress/depression at the momemnt and are concerned that the pressures you are under may affect your judgement of a trial, you will be dropped like a stone.
