Mad Gypsy,
Saw your post re Scooby security and saw that you are a 4th Dan in Tae Kwon-Do.
Where do you train, and which association are you a member of?
Cheers

I'm part of the ITF. My instructor was the late Founder of Taekwon-Do; General Choi Hong Hi.
I have schools in Bournemouth Poole and Christchurch.
Which school do train at and what grade are you?
ITF or WTF?

I used to train with John when he was at Wishaw, about 10 years ago, we were in the Scottish team at the same time.
Here is my website if you want to have a look.

No I wasn't, the Scottish is the only one we don't do.
Living on the south coast of England means non of my students want to travel 500-600 miles for a comp.
I may be taking my 5th Degree with GM Rhee next year. Not looking forward to fingertips through a board though, as is required for 5th.
You must have taken your gradings under GM Rhee? I took my 4th under Gen. Choi in 2000, like you I was 24.
GM Rhee lives in Glasgow doesn't he?

I have attended several seminars with GM Rhee. I was also fortunate enough to share a meal with him and Master O'Neill a year or two ago.
I ussually attend GM Rhee events in Salisbury which are hosted by Master O'Neil. Salisbury is only 40 miles up the road.
You are indeed very lucky to have a living Taekwon-Do legend so close to you.
I have never tested under GM Rhee, I'm not sure if I will take my 5th, Taekwon-Do has not been the same for me since June 15th 2002.

(disclaimer I know nothing about taekwondo but had a group of friends who did and never shut up about it)
ITF is for girls who don't want to get hit.WTF all the way.
Any of you two ever heard of Master Eldon from the tang or Mr Brown from somewhere in surrey. near lightwater I think.

I did a little bit of this and that when I was younger and when I called the WTF boys poofs for wearing 'michelin man' outfits They said OK put one on and see how hard you are. Bad bad idea and I think they do it because their competitions represent the scrappy scruffy nature of real combat and how hard moves are to do in that situation. I don't have experiance of lots of WTF schools but the Tang really used to stress power and the force they generated was frightening. The only experience I had of ITF was one black belt and although he was very fast and nimble he never had the power of the WTF guys and he admittted they might be better in a real situation. WTF competitions are the most boring things on earth. though and don't lets get started on the olimpics thing.
If you ever see martial arts books with a short man flying through the air kicking an oriental woman (his ex wife) then that would be master Eldon. His pictures have appeared in a few books and magazines not always with his permission.

ITF isn't an art either just a backwardly evolving martial science .
WTF is in the olimpics so it must be better.
full contact is where its at not dancing
copyright the book of WTF vs ITF standard 'discussion' the student edition.

You WTF people really show your true colours every time you open your mouths. Your lack of knowledge should make you ashamed!
As for ITF not being able to handle hard contact, don't make me laugh! You should watch an ITF Black Belt comp, it is pretty far from semi contact. We also use those things attached to the end of our arms, they are called hands, have you guys heard of them?
Back in 96 at a WTF comp in Peterbourgh a few of us ITF stylits were kindly invited to one of their regoinal comps.
Of all the fights of the day I was the only person to score a knckout (ITF or WTF). Twice actually, though the second was with a straight right to the jaw for which I got disqualified.
I personally will take the Pepsi Challenge with a WTF stylist any old day of the week and under any rules.

On the subject of power...
I think that many W.T.F. stylists will agree that it is a silly argument to suggest that it is superior in power to I.T.F.
I would liken W.T.F. sparring to almost like jousting, whereby both opponents move around, vieing for position, then bang, an explosive turning kick to the chest protector. Then back out and start again.
There is no such thing as a combination in W.T.F. sparring, and as Mad Gypsy quite rightly states, the use of hands is non-existent.
As any Tae Kwon-Do practitioner should be able to tell you, the name Tae Kwon Do quite literally translates at FOOT HAND ART, or in other words, The Art of Hand and Foot.
Why do W.T.F. practitioners see fit to exclude the "Kwon" from the art????
I found it quite comical how when the W.T.F. sparrers got in close, where I would be used to I.T.F. stylists unleashing a series of explosive punches followed by a kick, the W.T.F. guys simply put their arms out to the sides and bang chests, almost like some kind of bizaar mating ritual!
Some guys engaged in a boxing style clinch too, which made me ask, "Don't they use their hands? or haven't they been taught that part yet?"
Taekwon

Punches to the chest were alloed in WTF I assume they still are and if the people you sparred with didn't use fists I'd suggest it was their lack of skill. The distinctions between one gay *** kicking art like WTF and another gay *** kicking art like ITF are pretty small when every one knows real hard men do wing chun jeet kune do or pakua.

<---refusing to bite.
The people I refer to aren't people that I've sparred with, they are people who were taking part in a national W.T.F. tournament that I spectated at.
Black belt national champions included from all over the world were there, and I don't think I saw a hand technique being thrown.

I have undertaken every grading with Grandmaster Rhee. I have never graded under the late Gen. Choi although I have been to a few of his seminars.
We still have seminars with GM Rhee every couple of months and until recently (prior to I.T.F. break up) he was doing our students calendar gradings every month himself too.
You are right, he still stays in Glasgow as well, so we are very lucky to have one of the original pioneering Masters as well as the person who brought TKD to the UK so close to us.
Have you ever graded with GM Rhee before?
If not, you should try and get along to a seminar beforehand and introduce yourself.
There is an official I.T.F. 3 day seminar prior to the black belt grading at the end of August at Kent if you are interested?

No, don't know them.
I was at a WTF tournament in the Kelvin Hall Arena last Saturday and I have to say, although I will be accused of bias, if a top level I.T.F. fighter and a top level W.T.F. fighter were to go up against each other, from what I have seen, the I.T.F. fighter would win.
I.T.F. is a much more rounded and complete method, whereas the b@stardised W.T.F. is a more of a game about who can kick the other person with a turning kick to the chest first and quickest. (I use the term "turning kick" loosely as it hardy resembles a technical kick, more of a "football kick")
No real tactics, just speed and stamina.
I give enourmous credit to their fitness and speed, but it is basically a sport as opposed to a martial art.
IMHO of course!
