Question

Hi all,

This being the first free weekend with decent weather since moving house, Mrs C and I have spent this afternoon gardening.

Realisation: we both hate gardening

Can anyone please recommend someone who'll come round say, once a week, to mow the lawn, weed the beds, prune the triffids and so on? We're in Farnborough, Hants.

Ta
Andy.

My cousin studied horticulture and used to have his own business doing gardening before he bacame a teacher. I'm sure he'll be willing to help during the summer break.

What sort of thing do you need doing ?

Cool

First off, we need some one-off maintenance-reducing work doing: putting down a porous membrane over the flower beds to keep the weeds down, laying some bricks around the borders to mark the edges of the lawn (and remove the need to trim the edges) and planting a few rose bushes. Ongoing, we need the lawn mowing, weeds pulling, climbing plants tying up and other general maintenance - pruning, pest control and so on. The garden isn't huge - the area of a tennis court at most - but there's a lot of borders to look after, and we both despise this sort of work

Wink

I understand that Telboy is something of a keen horticulturist, provided that your garden doesn't involve too many downward gradients

Exclamation

Andy,

Funnily enough I have friends in Farnborough who came to the same conclusion!!!

They are currently using a gardener who did a big clear out, then set up some trelaces (sp?) and is now only doing general gardening work.

I'll get his number for you!

Cheers
Andy

AndyC, in all seriousness, what is it about gardening that you hate?

I've always found it very relaxing. And very rewarding, when you've got loads of different shapes, flowers and so on all looking great together as a result of what you've planned and planted yourself.

Personally, i could never live anywhere without at least a little bit of garden to dabble with now...

Andy: Thanks

TelBoy: It's physically hard work, it's dirty and it takes up a lot of time out of my weekends that I'd rather spend doing other stuff. All I want a garden for is barbecues; keeping the plants under control is just a chore from which I don't derive any pleasure.

Unfortunately, the people from whom we bought the house apparently liked gardening, so although it's very pretty to look at, our garden hasn't exactly been designed for minimum maintenance. If I want dirty, difficult and time-consuming jobs to pass my spare time, I'll work on my Westfield - at least I get the pleasure of driving it afterwards.

Red face

Do what we did!!

Take great pleasure is killing most of the plants in the garden, then build a deck that takes up a third of the garden, then use pebbles for the rest of the garden!!!

Luckily we have a tiny garden! (The main reason for buying the house!)

Andy: If it were up to me, that's exactly what I'd do - although I'd have to admit that it looks quite nice as it is. The house has a great double garage - the reason we bought it - but it came with a garden as well, like it or not

About 1/3 of it is covered with a patio, and the lawn is flat (good for a robot lawnmower), but it's the lawn edges and weeding that took the time at the weekend. Life's too short.

A.
