Great tips, thanks
Michelle - Its a kind of real life love-story/gangster book. In fact the majority of it is from real-life experience.
Any recommended agents that we could use ?

My GF has written a book/novel and would like to find out how to go about getting it published.
Don't want to just send it off to any old publisher and have them rip it off.
Anyone in the publishing game or have any experience to share ?
Thanks

She'll probably have to send it to every publisher out there in order to have any chance, depending on how good it is of course. If one expresses an interest, that's the time to talk numbers

Never, ever send direct to a publisher. Tell her to send her manuscript to lots of literary agents. Search Google, there are loads of site with lists of agents and what genre they specialise in, the agents website usually tell you how to send your manuscript (either full thing or 3 chapters with synopsis etc.)

Unfortunately it is very hard to get a book accepted. Rev is right about sending to an agent - most publishers will not accept unsolicited manuscripts or manuscripts that are not represented by an agent. My mother was/is a literary agent but is semi-retired now. She spent many years wading thru' manuscripts just to send them back to the place they came from. She was one of the more principled agents as she read and returned manuscripts. many don't read and file straight in the recycle bin.

Yep, off to an agent, I am in the process of doing a novel and will be going down that route in the next year (read decade) or so when I get off my *** and finally finish it.
What genre if you don't mind me asking? I am dabbling in a bit of horror/fantasy.

I second what Rev and ProperCharlie have said a literary agent is essential. My father has had 4 books published (5th on the way) and I work in our family business so deal with our literary agent etc.,.. and go with her to meetings with our publishers. So a literary agent is the first thing your GF needs.
I think it is important to be aware though that should the book be accepted by a literary agent and then by a publisher if you want to make the book a success your GF needs to be prepared to invest in her own PR. Publishers often do very little to promote many of the books on their list and many books sink without trace as a result. Often then once you show willing to support your own book and get some publicity you will then find you get more support from the publisher.
Best of luck

Dunk,
One of the better known lterary agents are
the Peters Fraser & Dunlop Group
Drury House
34-43 Russell Street
London
WC2B 5HA
They got my dad his first book deal, although we are not with them any more. Our current literary agent is not looking to take on any more authors at present.
Kind regards
Robin
