If they were homing ladybirds they have probably flown back to the supplier.Who will then sell them on again.
When you first released them did you stand in the garden shaking a tin that rattles.

When we got our cat we were told to cover her paws with butter so she'd come home. I didn't look at the ladybird's feet - maybe the supplier had covered them in butter? Or maybe I should have done this?

So how come the ladybirds flew away, but the greenfly stayed???
Perhaps you can get roses that attract ladybirds, but scare greenfly (but then you wouldn't need the ladybirds in the first place!).
Ok, i got it... buy roses with wings, and thus they will fly away - no greenfly, and thus no need to buy ladybirds
