Coming home from work tonight in the taxi.. road v.near my house.. 30mph limit I probably used to do 45.. wide and straight.. see a volvo cabrio. in the middle of the road at a junction.. fairly wide.. kids bike to the left of the junction and kid face down in the road in front of the car to the right.. looked to be blood on the road.. feel sorry for the driver and the kid on the bike who couldnt have been more than 12.. Driver can hardly have been speeding due to position of the car..
But made me think how sorry I felt for the kid if he was 10 or so and had no ID on him and how would his parents come to see him, find out how he is??
Dont think I will ever forget that image.. Seen some bad things but.. that just made a bad day even worse

I would have thought so, judging by people not helping and just standing there looking away..

in all seriousness perhaps there is a case for people to need to have a licence to ride a bike these days with traffic so much more than in days gone by.....to demonsrate a level of proficiency??
I hate driving by kids on bikes, they are so unpredictable half the time

Its not a good experience David, sort of thing that sticks in the memory for some time. I feel very sorry myself about the lad too, terrible not to have had any kind of a life yet.

Not a nice sight, I live in a small village in Sleepy Dorset, right next to the playing field, it never ceases to amaze me at the age of the kids that are in the field i=on their own, in this day and age, is it really right for kids of say 5/6 years young to be out on their own? I've never even considered the Identification issues that could result, it could be very awkward couldn't it!!
David, go for a pint mate, it might help take your mind off of it!

I agree with you Ron and I'm also surprised at the number of 12 year olds I see out very late at night when I go night fishing. Their parents can have no control or even interest in their welfare. Very worrying.

Almost took one out myself last nite coming home off the ferry at about 10.30pm. Little village, 40mph limit, poor streetlights, kid on bike with no lights right out in front of me. Don't know how I missed him as I weas dog tired at the near end of a 700 mile journey.

Have had 2 similar incidents myself coming home of late... First time was about 10:30 at night, 2 boys on bicycles, no lights, no bright clothing - nothing. Shot straight out from a cul de sac directly in front of my car. Unfortunately they then split so one went either side of the car so I had nowhere to go. Fortuantely I was doing about 7mph and it didn't come to anything, apart from scaring the life out of them.
Second incident was a girl on a bike, I came round the corner of the road on which I live - a cul de sac - to find her in the middle of the road, biking along, looking down at the floor. I stopped but had I not beeped and startled the life out of her she would have ridden into the front of my car!
Children seem to have no road-awareness these days....

sad sight will stay with for years im sure
just have to add to katana views on banning bikes
my bike was my life from aged 6 to 16 im sure there are many like me who have grown up without wealth to that away from kids would be taking away a real part of growing up,perhaps better training for drivers would help,
maybe katana could sign up too.

I make my Daughter cycle on the pavements. Its not that car drivers dont look out for them, although not all do, but sometimes they just cant be seen.
I always look out for them as I used to be a cyclist myself. Another danger is when they come hurtling down the road, a car stops and flashes you to turn into a road, and bang... cyclist not seen is suddenly there.
It must have been awful seeing that. I dread my kids going out even on foot these days. The roads are never quiet anymore unless its 3am.

You could go as far as saying they can't go out at all.. but then what kind of child would you be rearing. One with no social eptitude at all.
I have no qualms in telling my children what awful things can happen to them. They are fully aware and know when to strike I just hope it never comes to that.
I guess some parents dont care. Like Ron said, the amount of 5 year olds I see out and about is disgraceful really... wandering the streets is not the place. But by the age of 12, they are already in Senior school and should be allowed that element of trust to mix with their peers and so form out of school relationships.
Im rambling now, probably trying to justify letting my children out and about.
