I thought it was the norm to exchange some details, ie contact info, address phone number etc, and insurance company details

not sure about policy numbers tho, in the past (in my company car) all I could give was the contact details of the person who was in charge of fleet, plus my tel number, and I phoned fleet at the scene to inform them of the accident

then i believe the insurance companies then do all the swapping arguing fighting etc

One incident, the guy kept phoning me up & writing to me, to try and help him prosecute the police (dont ask why), I was told by my insurance company to ignore anything he said, or wrote, and that they would deal with only his insurance company

Personally, I'd only give him/her my basic details. His/her insurance co can get in touch with your company through your car reg, etc.

You should give your name and contact details (address/phone number) and then pass on your insurance companies details as appropriate.

However, If necessary you can always give your solicitors details instead.

Contact + Insurance details.
Dont say "sorry" - can be taken as admission of fault.

'Don't say sorry, it's an admission of fault'

IMO if it's your fault, then admit it. Having been on the receiving end of a nobber who steadfastly denied it was his fault for nearly two years (right up until the day before he was to appear in court, in fact!) it gets on my **** if there's a clear cut guilt situation and the guilty party doesn't take it on the chin.

If it's not clear then have a go but 9/10 it'll just end up knock for knock so your insurance is still hit and you've caused a lot of grief in the process.

Also if they give you a contact number give it a call to check it's real, and the other person is who they say they are.

I'd recommend you take down his/her registration number, that way if you are given fake contact details you've got something to go on.

Always carry a disposble camera in the car and take pics of damage and take a sneaky one of the driver. Worked for me

I told my name, address, mobile no and gave my reg to the guy and he gave me the same. Sent my insurance co. all the pics i took (and kept copies).

Gordo, sorry mate, bad advice.

Whether its your fault or not, say nothing. Let the insurers sort it out.

Read the terms of your insurance policy. Admission of liability may breach the terms of your policy.

My solicitor once told me that they legally can't enforce this threat. He could have been wrong, so don't quote him on it!
