Angry

Please could someone advise me of a decent free popup killer.

Thanks

Justin, who for some reason has finally snapped with streetmap popups after tolerating them for ages....

if you use a Mac, then get Apple's Safari Browser, it has a rather nifty "block popup adverts" option, very cool. Pity it's still beta though

hmm..

I have a bit of an opinion on this.

The sites that use pop-ups, whilst they are annoying, are doing it in order to pay for the site to be there. I personally hate them, but in many ways it's immoral to block them.

Think of it this way. If you said "I am sick of paying for products", it wouldn't entitle you to have them free of charge.

Using Pop-up killers is basically bandwidth theft, as you are costing the site money by downloading their pages, but don't allow them to earn money in return to pay for it.

I personally vote with my fingers, and just don't frequent sites that have pop-ups unless I really want to. But I don't think it's fair to just steal their services.

All the best

Simon

Simon: You have a valid point, although it's perhaps fair to suggest that your opinion might not be entirely unbiased

There are two reasons why I don't normally use ad blocking while browsing ScoobyNet. The first is that you've aired your views on the subject before and I respect that. The second is that SN's ads are unobtrusive and don't detract significantly from the content of the site - and that's something I'm happy to show support for.

Pop-ups are a different matter - they're intrusive and annoying, and actually require action on my part to close them. They're not a form of advertising that I'm prepared to tolerate for those reasons, and that's a message that I want to send out to those sites that use them. If they see that their ads haven't even been downloaded, they'll have to display them some other way.

The alternative is not to use those sites at all, but:

- by the time a pop-up has appeared, it's too late to avoid the site. You've logged a hit already.
- if you know a site uses pop-ups and never again access it, how do you know when it's stopped using them?
- if you never visit a site at all, how does the host know why? Blocking pop-ups (and their associated downloads) gives a mechanism by which site hosts can tell that they need to advertise some other way.

A.

i absolutely hate the ones that come up, where there's no box, the transparent ones that take over your screen.. The Sun's site is terrible for that

TBH, i thought with most advert-banner schemes, webmasters don't make money unless people actually click on the adverts. Simply showing them isn't enough. As you have no intention of clicking on them, blocking them is fine
