Question

Guys I am in the market for a digital camcorder, what should I look for, what do I need?

I am looking for one that I can take stills with as well and will not be obsolete in a couple of months.

I had a long chat with a nice lady in Dixons but of course she was trying to sell me some expensive items.

Most only do stills at 640x480, which is ok for web but not for printing. Some do bigger (Sony) but then its still only 1024x768.

What's your budget?

By digital, do you mean DV - otherwise Digital 8 may be a (cheaper) option.

Oh, and whatever you buy, there will be a better cheaper one in a couple of months!!

Kryten DV it is,
Budget depends on the advice I get I'll not spend too much unless I need to to get one that is gonna do the job.

How important in DV in and OUT?

They all have DV out.

However, if you want to edit on a PC and then spool it back onto DV tapes you'll also need DVin.

Due to the Euro regs this makes the camcorder a VCR and taxed higher so a lot of them don't include it.

However, there are many places that can DVin enable a camcorder for about 60 quid (allegedly!).

I've got a Sony PC5 which is excellent and very small - ideal for mounting in the car
