Anyone ever listened to the above? It's fantastic (even though over 20 years old now).
"No one would have believed, that in the last year of the 19th century, that human affairs were being watched from the timesless worlds of space. No one could have dreamed that we were being scrutinised, like someone who studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water. Few men even considered the possiblity of life on other planets and yet, across the gulf of space, minds immeasurably superior to our, regarded this earth with envious eyes. And slowly, and surely, they drew their plans against us...."

This used to freak me out when I was yonger. I've got the album in the loft with the pull out "booklet".
Has anyone read the book? Great story. I always hoped that someone would make a proper film about it with some of those fighting machines. Set in late Voctorian England, not an Amercianized version that was done last time. Would be great IMO.
I've also got a War of the Worlds game for the PC based on the Jeff Waynes records. same sounds, music and visuals.

Couldn't agree more, my dad had it on vinyl, listening to it as a child it was genuinely scary - of course I had to get it on CD, still throw it in occasionally, will play it to my children when they are a bit older....

Uh oh! Don't want to get into the 'vinyl vs. CD' debate. Anyway, I only have a Dual CS505 and Denon PMA-350 driving a pair of Tannoy 605s.
One day I'll get round to buying a Rega Planar 3, but I don't really use enough vinyl to justify it any more

got it on cd. fantastic. I remember hearing that when this was broadcast on the radio in the USA it caused mass hysteria as people thought it was for real. Is this a myth or is it true?

RB -- it's true, Orson Welles' theatre company did a radio production of it in (I think) 1938. It was done in a "we interrupt this broadcast to bring you news of an alien force ..." style, and did provoke some panic.

There is possibly going to be a live War of the Worlds show/concert this summer doing a number of UK dates. Can't say too much as all is not yet confirmed, but it should be going to press at the end of March, look out for it.

And again just to get the corner and as no one looks at the last post on a page.

Nexuas - see the link I posted earlier in the thread. I for one will definitely be going to seeing it.
I also work in Woking and of course that's where HG Wells lived and the novel was set (Horsell Common, Weybridge) etc. There is even a martian tripod in the town centre!

How weird is that? Just starting reading the book. I realised I knew the storyline, watched the film and had listened to the musical version, but had never actually sat down and read it.
I'm reading a real old version, one my grandad gave me dated 1928. The first editions were printed in 1898 according to the front of the book. Yet its still a fascinating read.
Hows about this for a description of the heat ray.
"Many think that in some way they are able to generate an intense heat in a chamber of practically absolute non-conductivity. This intense heat they project in a parallel beam against any object they choose by means of a parabolic mirror of unknown compostition, However it is done, it is certain that a beam of heat is the essence of the matter. Heat and invisible, instead of visible light. whatever is combustable flashes into flame at its touch, lead runs like water, it softens iron , cracks and melts glass and when it falls upon water, incontinently that explodes into steam"
Okay pretty tame by modern standards but it was written over 100 years ago.
astraboy.

Just seen this thread.
Quality music. I've got the CD at home. I really love the song 'forever autumn' probably due to a hitherto unmentioned liking for the moody blues (Dad has most of the records, and they have fantastic covers on them! amazing works of art I tell you!).
CD 2 also has remixes of some of the tracks, which are quite cool.
Plues there is a UlladubUlla remix cd, which I've not heard, but could be interesting.
