I've a friend at work who ordered a CD burner from them via their web page, which was never delivered and for which he is still awaiting a refund some 4 weeks later.
Their normal support number requires an abnormally long wait followed by false promises and he's getting no where fast!
Any idea where to go from here? (trading standards?) Or does anyone here work for Scan who could help out?

Did he pay by credit card (ie Visa, Mastercard).
If so, get onto the CC company and explain what the problem is. They should mark the transaction as being disputed and investigate on your behalf.

Oh, and it might take two or three months for the CC company to sort it out. I've queried three transactions - two have been refunded and the third is still pending.

A-ha! At last I can stick the knife in.
I ordered some stuff from them a month or so ago. It arrived, incomplete. I phoned, after 'queueing' for ages I eventually got through to be told they'd phone me back that afternoon. They didn't.
I phoned several times on other days. Friggin national rate call number as well. Still no luck. I e-mailed them several times from the response form on their website. Still nothing. Now I get my revenge by telling the story on the internet for everyone to read. I've given up trying to sort it now. It will soon be out-weighed by the cost of the calls.
Moral of the story. Before ordering anything from anyone try calling their customer services department first to see how quickly they answer the phone etc.
IMO you should be very careful in dealing with Scan. I won't ever use them again after they treated me like this. Shame. I was just going to look for a supplier for my consultancy too. Their loss.

Scan are ok to order from when they get it right or the item is working.
when something goes wrong they are pants!
I've lost count of the number of times i've ordered on my trade account and have had to spend AGES trying to get hold of them.
good luck !

Was v.impressed at first, but not v.impressed any more....
Some of the stuff appears end-of-line and looks nice and cheap - it is end of line and is actually expensive for what you get..but some stuff is current (esp. motherboards, processors and memory) and reasonable priced.
First few orders went OK, then I had to return a DVD player and card which was (in hindsight) mis-advertised. Took 8 weeks to get money back - 5 or 6 e-mails and maybe 40 non-answered phone calls before anything happened - the last e-mail I wrote was along the lines "I WILL buy more stuff from you WHEN you send my money back". Seemed to work....
(all IMHO of course )

scan are ok until something goes wrong (bits missing, it does n't work, and so on) and then they are absolutly cr@p, several friends have crossed swords with them - usual long waits on hold/no replies to e-mail, etc.

I can reitterate what has been said before about Scan...
We used to use them at a previous job occasionally when our trade suppliers didn't have things in and we wanted something quick. To be honest this was a waste of time mostly, there are other similar outfits who do the same sort of stuff for the same money (spot on/microdirect). Would recommend either of those above scan who consistantly got things wrong or didn't ship them!
