Why not 0-70 or 80.
Same as why not 1/3 mile for timings.

Is there some sorta logical explination.

Some sources quote 0-62 instead of 0-60, WTF is that all about?

As for the 1/4 mile all I can think of is the fact that a 1/4mile is 400m, and 1/3 is 533.3m making measuring more difficult

Or maybe the first person to do a sprint only has a 1/4 mile of road

I reckon UFO has got it. Simplicity of measuring. 0-100km/h is to the nearest mph 62. So i guess in the interests of simplicity of the British system, certain people used 60mph. As for 1/4 mile, this figure is pretty much used world-wide, so it probably came out of America, 1/4mile is roughly 400m so everybody is happy. THat is the best explanation I can come up with.

cause imprezas are only good for 0-60, a friend goes on about how quick his P1 is does 0-60 as quick as a ferarri but the fact that most peple seem to forget is that when the car goes 0-100 its a different matter, dont know the spec normal ferarris but know it of F40 does 0-60 in about 3.8 secs, most of our modded imprezas can keep with that, but 0-100 what would you think

it does 0-100 in 7 seconds and that is the difference in a quality( not that the imreza is not quality) car . we all have a fast car but try and challenge the real BOYZ and its only a dream

0-60mph is uk legal max on most roads
0-100kph is europe legal max (ditto)

real test of a car is 0 - 140mph - take a cool modded type R with 320bhp+ and it soon beats most "super" cars!!

I once read it in a magazine that 0-60 tests were originally invented by the Yanks.
It was chosen to measure the time it would take to accelerate from a standstill to join in with vehicles on the highway that were travelling at the maximum speed (which used to be 60 in some states - so the article said).

Anyway I think we are all agreed it's not really a great test nowadays for cars and even less so for bikes.

as mentioned above, 0-60 times (for "performance" cars) are misleading. 0-100 is the real test and i do see it being quoted more and more in performance car magazines. i know 100 is 30 over the maximum speed limit in the UK therefore some would argue pointless however it does give a very clear picture of the true performance available (after all, the power is there - up to you to use it, or not :-)

Yup, I'd love a 1/2 mile drag or even a mile!

The 0-60 acceleration test has been around for many many years. Even before I started driving! I think it was considered a significant test because hardly any cars would make it to 60 in first gear, not many could make it in second,so the gear changes had a big effect on the measured time. A time of 10 seconds used to be pretty impressive in those days. As was mentioned, 62 mph is used because it equates to 100 Kph. I imagine it is still used for traditional reasons really.

I think 0-60 was significant 40 or 50 yrs ago (they do time 0-60 back then), as many cars top out maybe 10 or 20mph later.
As the 0-100mph is relevant now (as nearly all cars can go over 100mph), 0-60 can be said as the '0-100' of the previous generations.

The best test (which should be in magazines really in addition to,or intead of, 0-60 and so forth) is the 30-70. For most people this is THE most important figure as most people only really concerned with how good the acceleration is whilst overtaking.
